Richard Bowden
Richard Bowden is a computer vision researcher at the University of Surrey whose AI work focuses on sign-language recognition and translation. He earned degrees at London, Leeds and Brunel, and held academic posts at Brunel, Oxford and Surrey. His work includes Neural Sign Language Translation in 2018 and Sign Language Transformers in 2020, and he received a Royal Society fellowship and became an IAPR Fellow. In 2022, he co-founded Signapse AI and became a BMVA Distinguished Fellow; in January 2025, he became Principal Investigator of the £8.45 million SignGPT project. As of October 2026, he is a Surrey professor and AI Fellow, leads the Cognitive Vision Group and UMCS, which works on real-time translation across British Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, English and Japanese using natural conversations between Deaf signers.

Timeline
-
1993–2000
Degrees and the Sullivan prize
He earns a BSc in computer science from the University of London in 1993, an MSc with distinction from the University of Leeds in 1995, and a PhD in computer vision from Brunel University in 1999. His thesis wins the Sullivan Doctoral Thesis Prize for the best UK thesis in computer vision in 2000.
-
1998–2006
Brunel and Surrey lecturer posts
He starts as Lecturer in Image Processing at Brunel in 1998 and joins Surrey as Lecturer in Multimedia Signal Processing from 2001 to 2006. From 2001 to 2004, he is also a Visiting Research Fellow at Oxford, working with Professors Zisserman and Brady.
-
2006–2011
Senior Lecturer and Reader
He becomes Senior Lecturer at Surrey in 2006 and Reader in 2008, a post he holds through 2011.
-
2013–2019
Research fellowships and journal service
He receives a Royal Society Leverhulme Trust Senior Research Fellowship in 2013 and serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence from 2013 to 2019. The International Association for Pattern Recognition makes him a Fellow in 2016 for contributions to computer vision in sign language, gesture and activity recognition and service to IAPR.
-
2018–2020
Sign language translation papers
In 2018, he coauthors Neural Sign Language Translation with Necati Cihan Camgoz, Simon Hadfield, Oscar Koller and Hermann Ney; the paper formalizes translation from sign-language video to spoken language in a neural machine translation framework. In 2020, he coauthors Sign Language Transformers, whose architecture jointly learns continuous sign-language recognition and translation in an end-to-end transformer model.
-
2022
Signapse and a BMVA award
Signapse AI is established in spring 2022 as a University of Surrey spin-out, and Bowden is one of its co-founders and Chief Research Officer. The British Machine Vision Association names him a Distinguished Fellow in 2022, making him its 21st recipient.
-
January 2025
Leading the SignGPT project
In January 2025, SignGPT receives £8.45 million from the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for a five-year project to build a large-language model that translates between signed and spoken language. Bowden is its Principal Investigator, and Surrey works with the University of Oxford and University College London's Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and UMCS leader
He is Professor of Computer Vision and Machine Learning at Surrey, an AI Fellow of its Institute for People-Centred AI, and leader of the Cognitive Vision Group. In January 2026, he leads the £3.5 million UK-Japan Understanding Multilingual Communication Spaces (UMCS) project for real-time translation across British Sign Language, Japanese Sign Language, English and Japanese, using natural conversations between Deaf signers. Signapse translates time-critical travel announcements in UK railway stations and international airports into photo-realistic sign-language videos.
