Researcher

Brian D. Ripley

Brian D. Ripley is a statistician whose work applied neural networks and machine-learning methods to statistical pattern recognition. He earned a Cambridge PhD and held posts at Imperial College, Strathclyde and Oxford. He co-authored Modern Applied Statistics with S-Plus, published research on neural-network classification, wrote Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks, and contributed to R. In 2026, he was named a Rousseeuw Prize laureate; as of October 2026, he is an Emeritus Professor of Applied Statistics at Oxford.

Timeline

  1. 1973–1976

    Cambridge degrees

He earns a BA in Mathematics at Cambridge in 1973 and completes a PhD in Probability and Statistics in 1976.

  2. 1976–1990

    Posts at three universities

At Imperial College London, he becomes a Lecturer in Statistics in 1976 and a Reader in 1980. He joins the University of Strathclyde as Professor of Statistics in 1983. He becomes Professor of Applied Statistics at the University of Oxford in 1990.

  3. 1994–1996

    Statistics and neural networks

He co-authors Modern Applied Statistics with S-Plus with W. N. Venables in 1994. His 1994 paper examines neural networks for classification, and his 1996 book Pattern Recognition and Neural Networks explains pattern recognition through statistical theory and machine learning.

  4. By 2011

    R Core Team and parallel

He joins the R Core Team in its early years and contributes to R's development and maintenance. R includes the parallel package, which supports parallel computation and random-number generation, in version 2.14.0 in 2011.

  5. 2013

    A Guy Medal in Silver

The Royal Statistical Society awards him its Guy Medal in Silver in 2013.

  6. 2014

    Retirement from Oxford

He retires from his Oxford post in August 2014 on grounds of ill health.

  7. 2026

    A Rousseeuw Prize

He is named as one of five laureates of the 2026 Rousseeuw Prize for Statistics.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus Professor at Oxford

He is an Emeritus Professor of Applied Statistics at Oxford.
