Arnold W. M. Smeulders

Also known as Arnold Wilhelmus Maria Smeulders

Smeulders is a computer-vision researcher whose work includes content-based image retrieval, and ACM SIGMM gave him an award in 2017. He earned an MSc in physics at Delft in 1977 and a PhD from Leiden's medical faculty in 1983, then moved to the University of Amsterdam in 1989 as an associate professor of computer science. His 2000 review of 200 references in content-based image retrieval appeared in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence. In 2014 Qualcomm bought Euvision Technologies, and the spin-off of his UvA lab became Qualcomm Research Netherlands. By March 2018 he is a retired professor at the University of Amsterdam.

  1. 1977–1983

    A Leiden PhD on pattern analysis

    At Delft he receives an MSc in physics in 1977, and a PhD from Leiden's medical faculty follows in 1983.

    Moving to the University of Amsterdam

    In 1989 he moves to the University of Amsterdam as an associate professor of computer science.

  3. 2000

    The image retrieval review

    The review Content-based image retrieval at the end of the early years covers 200 references and appears in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence in 2000.

    An IAPR fellowship

    The International Association for Pattern Recognition makes him a fellow in 2000.

  5. 2011

    Director of COMMIT

    His directorship of COMMIT, a national research center housed at CWI, begins in 2011.

  6. 2014

    The QUVA-lab with Qualcomm

    Qualcomm buys Euvision Technologies in 2014, and the spin-off of his UvA lab becomes Qualcomm Research Netherlands.

  7. 2017

    An ACM SIGMM award

    In 2017 ACM SIGMM gives him its award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications.

  8. March 2018

    Retired professor in Amsterdam

    By March 2018 he is a retired professor at the University of Amsterdam, working on multimedia and computer vision.
