Researcher

Xiao Bai

Xiao Bai is a computer vision researcher whose work includes deep stereo matching and sparse-view 3D reconstruction. He earned a bachelor's degree in computer science and technology at Beihang in 2001 and a computer science PhD at York in 2006, then worked at Bath before joining Beihang as an associate professor in 2009. In 2020, his AcfNet paper filtered stereo cost volumes and estimated matching uncertainty; in 2024, DNGaussian used depth normalization for sparse-view 3D reconstruction. He served as vice chair of IAPR's Structural and Syntactical Pattern Recognition committee and became an IAPR Fellow in 2026. As of October 2026, he is a professor and doctoral supervisor at Beihang, where he works on vision for unmanned systems and 3D computer vision.

Timeline

  1. 1997–2006

    Degrees at Beihang and York

He earns a bachelor's degree in computer science and technology at Beihang in 2001 and completes a computer science PhD at the University of York in 2006.

  2. 2006–2009

    Research officer at Bath

From September 2006 to January 2009, he works as a research officer in the Computer Science Department at the University of Bath.

  3. 2009–2015

    Associate professor at Beihang

In February 2009, he joins Beihang's School of Computing as an associate professor and holds the post through July 2015.

  4. 2020

    AcfNet for stereo matching

In 2020, he coauthors “Adaptive Unimodal Cost Volume Filtering for Deep Stereo Matching,” whose code is released as AcfNet. The method filters the cost volume with a unimodal distribution peaked at true disparities and estimates per-pixel matching uncertainty.

  5. 2024

    DNGaussian for sparse views

In 2024, he coauthors DNGaussian, a depth-regularized framework for sparse-view 3D Gaussian radiance fields. The method uses Global-Local Depth Normalization and offers few-shot novel-view synthesis.

  6. 2024–2026

    Vice chair of IAPR

From 2024 to 2026, he serves as vice chair of IAPR's Technical Committee on Structural and Syntactical Pattern Recognition.

  7. 2026

    An IAPR fellowship

In 2026, he becomes an IAPR Fellow for contributions to structural pattern recognition and 3D vision and service through IAPR's Technical Committees.

  8. As of October 2026

    Beihang professor

As of October 2026, he is a professor and doctoral supervisor at Beihang University's School of Computer Science and Engineering. His research focuses on vision for unmanned systems and 3D computer vision.
