Zhaoxiang Zhang
Also known as 张兆翔
Zhaoxiang Zhang is a computer vision researcher at the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA), whose work covers object detection and driving world models. He earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004 and a PhD under Tieniu Tan at CASIA in 2009, taught at Beihang University from 2009 to 2015, and returned to CASIA in July 2015. In 2019, he coauthored the Trident Network for object detection, and in November 2023 he coauthored Drive-WM, a world model for autonomous driving. The International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2024. He is a full professor at CASIA and executive deputy director of its Pattern Recognition Laboratory.
Timeline
-
2004–2009
Doctorate under Tieniu Tan
He receives a bachelor's degree from the Department of Electronic Science and Technology at the University of Science and Technology of China in 2004. He then studies under Professor Tieniu Tan at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition, Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and earns his PhD there in 2009.
-
2009–2015
Teaching at Beihang University
In October 2009, he joins the School of Computer Science and Engineering at Beihang University as an assistant professor, and he becomes an associate professor in 2012. From 2014 to 2015, he is vice-director of the Department of Computer Application Technology.
-
July 2015
Return to the Institute of Automation
In July 2015, he returns to the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He is a full professor there in the Center for Research on Intelligent Perception and Computing (CRIPAC) and the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition.
-
2019
CAAI Distinguished Contributions Award
In 2019, he receives the Distinguished Contributions Award of the Chinese Association for Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) and is awarded the National Youth Talent Support Program.
-
2019
Trident Networks for detection
In 2019, he coauthors Scale-Aware Trident Networks for Object Detection with Yanghao Li, Yuntao Chen and Naiyan Wang, for ICCV 2019. TridentNet is a parallel multi-branch network, with each branch sharing the same transformation parameters and using its own receptive field, and it reaches 48.4 mAP on COCO with a ResNet-101 backbone.
-
November 2023
Drive-WM driving world model
In November 2023, he coauthors Driving into the Future, a paper that introduces Drive-WM, a driving world model compatible with existing end-to-end planning models. Drive-WM generates multiview videos of driving scenes and chooses a trajectory from image-based rewards.
-
2024
Fellow of the IAPR
In 2024, the International Association for Pattern Recognition names him a Fellow for contributions to pattern recognition and visual perception.
-
As of October 2026
Executive deputy director at CASIA
He is a full professor at the National Laboratory of Pattern Recognition and the State Key Laboratory of Multimodal Artificial Intelligence Systems at the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also serves as executive deputy director of the Pattern Recognition Laboratory.
