Shuly Wintner

Shuly Wintner is a computer scientist whose research spans formal grammar, Hebrew natural language processing and multilingual communication. He earned a computer science PhD from the Technion in 1997, joined the University of Haifa in 2000 and established its Computational Linguistics Group. His early work included an abstract grammar machine and a review of natural language processing for Hebrew. He coauthored code-switching research and language technology for Hebrew parliamentary proceedings, and served as general chair of EACL 2014 and EACL Chair from 2021 to 2022. As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus of computer science at the University of Haifa.

Abstract Machine for Typed Feature Structures

In 1994, he and Nissim Francez coauthor Abstract Machine for Typed Feature Structures.

  2. 1997

    A Technion PhD

He earns a computer science PhD from the Technion in 1997.

  3. 2000

    Founding Haifa's group

After joining the University of Haifa in 2000, he establishes its Computational Linguistics Group.

  4. 2004

    Reviewing Hebrew NLP

In 2004, he reviews theoretical and practical natural language processing for Hebrew.

  5. 2014–2022

    EACL general chair and chair

He serves as general chair of EACL 2014 and as EACL Chair from 2021 to 2022.

  6. 2023

    Shared words trigger code-switching

In 2023, he coauthors a study based on five large datasets in three language pairs. It finds that words shared by both languages can trigger code-switching.

    Knesset models and corpus

In 2024, he coauthors Knesset-DictaBERT, a Hebrew language model fine-tuned on the Knesset Corpus. In 2025, he coauthors a paper introducing an annotated corpus of Hebrew parliamentary proceedings, and a study that measures affective polarization through the emotional styles of Knesset government and opposition members. The polarization study is accepted/in press at Computational Linguistics in 2026.
