Nissim Francez
Also known as נסים פרנסיז
Nissim Francez is a computer scientist whose computational-linguistics work uses formal methods to represent natural-language grammar and meaning. He earned degrees in mathematics and philosophy at the Hebrew University and graduate degrees at the Weizmann Institute, then wrote about fairness in concurrent programs. At Technion, he became a professor, led the Computational Linguistics Laboratory and held the Bank Leumi Chair; his work includes a typed-feature-structure machine, Unification Grammars and books on proof-theoretic and connexive logic. He is an emeritus faculty member at Technion.
Timeline
-
1965
Mathematics and philosophy
He earns a B.Sc. in mathematics and philosophy at the Hebrew University in 1965.
-
1971–1976
Graduate degrees at Weizmann
At Weizmann's Department of Applied Mathematics, he earns an M.Sc. in 1971 and a Ph.D. in 1976 under adviser Amir Pnueli.
-
1986
Fairness in concurrent programs
He publishes Fairness in 1986, a monograph that develops ways to reason about fairness in concurrent systems, scheduling, liveness and nondeterminism in distributed programs.
-
1991
Professor at Technion
He becomes a full professor in the Computer Science Faculty at Technion in 1991.
-
1994
Abstract Machine for Typed Feature Structures
With Shuly Wintner, he describes an abstract machine for linguistic formalisms based on typed feature structures such as HPSG. The 1994 paper gives these formalisms operational semantics and implements unification.
-
1996–2010
Lab head and Bank Leumi Chair
He heads Technion's Computational Linguistics Laboratory from 1996 to 2006. He holds the Bank Leumi Chair in Computer Science from 2000 to 2010 and retires from Technion as a professor emeritus in 2010.
-
2010–2021
Proof-Theoretic Semantics and Unification Grammars
In 2010, Francez and Roy Dyckhoff publish “Proof-Theoretic Semantics for a Natural Language Fragment”. With Shuly Wintner, he writes Unification Grammars, a mathematical account of grammar formalisms underlying Lexical-Functional Grammar and Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar. He publishes Proof-Theoretic Semantics in 2015, a monograph on meaning in logic and natural language, and A View of Connexive Logics in June 2021, a monograph on non-classical logics.
-
As of October 2026
Emeritus faculty at Technion
As of October 2026, he is an emeritus faculty member in Technion computer science.
