Shumeet Baluja

Shumeet Baluja is a computer scientist whose AI work spans neural face detection, video discovery, optimization, and large language models. He earned a Carnegie Mellon computer science PhD in 1996, and his face-detection paper with Henry Rowley and Takeo Kanade won the 2006 Longuet-Higgins Prize. His career included research roles at Lycos and Google and technology leadership at JAMDAT Mobile. At Google, he worked on ambient-audio systems for television and YouTube video discovery, then used deep networks to model optimization landscapes. In 2025 he coauthored Mind Evolution for LLM reasoning, and as of October 2026 he is founder and co-CEO of Poetiq.

  1. 1996

    Neural network face detection

    He completes a computer science PhD at Carnegie Mellon in 1996 and publishes Neural Network-Based Face Detection with Henry Rowley and Takeo Kanade. The system uses a retinally connected neural network to examine small image windows and trains with a bootstrap method that adds false detections.

  2. By 2006

    Lycos, JAMDAT and Google

    He moves from a chief scientist role at Lycos to CTO of JAMDAT Mobile, then works as a Google research scientist by 2006.

  3. 2006

    Awards for face and television work

    In 2006, he coauthors an ambient-audio system that identifies television programs; the paper wins Euro-ITV's best-paper award. His 1996 face-detection paper wins the Longuet-Higgins Prize in 2006.

  4. 2008

    YouTube video discovery

    In 2008, he coauthors Video Suggestion and Discovery for YouTube, a paper that takes random walks through the platform's view graph.

  5. 2017

    Deep networks for optimization

    In 2017, he uses deep networks to model optimization landscapes and guide searches across problems in packing, graphics, scheduling, layout, and compression.

  6. 2025

    Mind Evolution

    In 2025, he coauthors Evolving Deeper LLM Thinking, which introduces Mind Evolution, an LLM process that generates, crosses over, refines, and selects candidate solutions. The method solves over 99% of TravelPlanner and Natural Plan tasks within its tested compute budgets.
