Hagit Hel-Or

Also known as Hagit Zabrodsky Hel-Or

Hagit Hel-Or is a computer vision researcher whose career connects symmetry research with machine-learning applications in rehabilitation and developmental assessment. She earned degrees in mathematics and computer science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and completed a 1994 PhD on symmetry in vision after postdoctoral work at Bar-Ilan and Stanford. With Shmuel Peleg and David Avnir, she coauthored a 1995 paper on symmetry and a 2010 article on computational symmetry for vision and graphics. Her 2025 and 2026 work applies machine learning and vision to rehabilitation assessment and computerized developmental testing. As of October 2026, she is a full professor at the University of Haifa and heads the Computational Human Behavior Lab.

Timeline

  1. 1985–1994

    Degrees and a symmetry PhD

She earns a BSc in mathematics and computer science at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1985 and an MSc in computer science there in 1989. Her 1994 PhD in computer science examines computational and perceptual modeling of symmetry in vision under advisor Shmuel Peleg.

  2. 1993–1997

    Postdoc at Bar-Ilan and Stanford

She completes a postdoctoral appointment in Bar-Ilan University's Math and Computer Science Department from October 1993 to February 1994. She then joins Stanford University's Psychology Department as a postdoctoral researcher from May 1994 to December 1997.

  3. 1995

    Symmetry as a Continuous Feature

With Shmuel Peleg and David Avnir, she coauthors “Symmetry as a Continuous Feature” in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence in 1995.

  4. 1997–1998

    From Bar-Ilan to Haifa

She becomes a lecturer in Bar-Ilan University's Math and Computer Science Department in January 1997. In October 1998, she joins Haifa University's Computer Science Department as a senior lecturer.

  5. 2010

    Computational symmetry in vision

With Yanxi Liu, Craig S. Kaplan and Luc Van Gool, she coauthors a 195-page article in Foundations and Trends in Computer Graphics and Vision in 2010. It presents algorithmic approaches to symmetry in digital data for computer vision and graphics.

  6. February 2025

    Machine learning for rehabilitation

In February 2025, she coauthors “Action assessment in rehabilitation: Leveraging machine learning and vision-based analysis,” published in Computer Vision and Image Understanding.

  7. 2026

    Machine learning for adaptive testing

In 2026, she coauthors a study that uses machine-learning-based computerized adaptive testing to shorten the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Developmental Inventory. The paper is accepted/in press in IEEE Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics.

  8. As of October 2026

Professor and lab head at Haifa

As of October 2026, she is a full professor in the University of Haifa's Department of Computer Science and heads its Computational Human Behavior Lab.
