Dan Feldman
Dan Feldman is a computer scientist at the University of Haifa who develops coreset algorithms for big data, machine learning and robotics. He earned his doctorate at Tel Aviv University in 2010 and conducted postdoctoral work at Caltech and MIT before establishing Haifa's Robotics and Big Data Laboratory in 2014. His research applied coresets to sparse data and least-mean-squares solvers, while the Haifa lab develops real-time methods for data from robot sensors. At the Blue Limassol Forum in May 2025, he was set to present a drone and e-platform project for marine pollution monitoring, and his 2026 research developed linear-time coresets for segment clustering. As of October 2026, he is an associate professor in Haifa's Faculty of Computer & Information Science.

Timeline
-
2010
A doctorate at Tel Aviv
He earns a PhD at Tel Aviv University in 2010 under Micha Sharir and Amos Fiat.
-
By 2012
Postdoctoral work at MIT and Caltech
By 2012, he has spent a year and a half as a postdoc at Caltech's Center for the Mathematics of Information and works in MIT's Distributed Robotics Lab. At MIT, he develops systems for streaming data from sensors, smartphones, images and robots.
-
2014
Building Haifa's robotics lab
In 2014, he establishes the Robotics and Big Data Laboratory in the University of Haifa's Computer Science Department. The lab designs coreset algorithms for real-time learning on large datasets, including data from robot sensors.
-
2016
Coresets for sparse data
At the Annual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems in 2016, he and Mikhail Volkov coauthor a coreset method with Daniela Rus for sparse datasets. They apply it to Wikipedia's 1.4-million-article, 4.4-million-word matrix, using low-rank approximation to identify its 100 most common topics; the technique serves tools used in natural-language processing, computer vision and signal processing.
-
2019
Fast and accurate LMS solvers
With Alaa Maalouf and Ibrahim Jubran, he coauthors Fast and Accurate Least-Mean-Squares Solvers at NeurIPS in 2019. Their algorithm returns a weighted subset of d+1 vectors that preserves the input sum and can speed existing LMS solvers by up to 100×. The paper receives an Outstanding Paper Honorable Mention.

May 2025
Drones for marine monitoring
In May 2025, Professor Dan Feldman is set to present a research project with Andreas Constantinides at the Blue Limassol Forum. The project develops an e-platform and drones for risk assessment and marine pollution monitoring; Feldman heads the New Robotics & Big Data Labs at the University of Haifa.

2026
Coresets for segment clustering
With David Denisov, Shlomi Dolev and Michael Segal, he coauthors a method for k-means clustering of segments in 2026. It builds a small weighted coreset in linear time, and its experiments include real-time video tracking.
-
As of October 2026
Associate professor at Haifa
As of October 2026, he is an associate professor at the University of Haifa in the Faculty of Computer & Information Science and Department of Computer Science.
