Michael C. Fairhurst

Also known as Mike Fairhurst

Michael C. Fairhurst is an Emeritus Professor at the University of Kent whose research covers image analysis, computer vision, handwriting analysis, neural architectures and biometric processing. Born in 1948, he earned a PhD at Kent in 1972, wrote the 1988 textbook Computer Vision for Robotic Systems: An Introduction, and coauthored papers on goal-seeking neurons and RAM-based neural networks in 1991 and 1992. In 1997, he published "Signature verification revisited: promoting practical exploitation of biometric technology", and the International Association for Pattern Recognition elected him a Fellow in 2004. He became head of his Kent department in 2008, edited Age Factors in Biometric Processing in 2013, and wrote Biometrics: A Very Short Introduction for Oxford University Press in 2018.

Timeline

  1. 1972

    A PhD at Kent

Born in 1948, he earns a PhD at the University of Kent in Canterbury in 1972.

  2. 1988–1999

    A textbook on robot vision

Prentice-Hall International publishes his 193-page textbook Computer Vision for Robotic Systems: An Introduction in June 1988. He chairs the IEE PG Committee E4 on image processing and vision from 1989 to 1995, and the IEE IPA conference in 1992, 1995, 1997 and 1999.

  3. 1991–1992

    RAM-based neural networks

In 1991, he coauthors "Adaptive pattern-recognition using goal seeking neurons" with E.C.D.B.C. Filho and D.L. Bisset in Pattern Recognition Letters. The three authors then analyse the saturation problem in RAM-based neural networks in Electronics Letters in 1992.

  4. 1997–2003

    Signature verification and classifiers

In 1997, he publishes "Signature verification revisited: promoting practical exploitation of biometric technology" in the Electronics & Communication Engineering Journal. With Ahmad Fuad Rezaur Rahman, he designs a multiple expert decision combination platform for pattern classification in 1997. He co-chairs the organising committee of the ICDAR international conference in 2003.

  5. 2004

    Fellow of the IAPR

The International Association for Pattern Recognition elects him a Fellow in 2004 for contributions to pattern recognition.

  6. 2008–2011

    Head of department at Kent

A professor of computer vision in Kent's School of Engineering and Digital Arts, he becomes head of the department in 2008. In 2011, he spends a month visiting Julian Fierrez's biometrics research group to work on signature biometrics.

  7. 2013–2018

    Books on ageing and biometrics

In 2013, he edits Age Factors in Biometric Processing, which the IET publishes as the first book on how human ageing affects biometric systems. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the IET Biometrics journal and as series editor of the IET Advances in Biometrics book series. Oxford University Press publishes his Biometrics: A Very Short Introduction in November 2018.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at Kent

In 2019, he coauthors a paper with Tasmina Islam on how writer style, age and gender affect natural revocability analysis in handwritten signature biometrics. He is an Emeritus Professor in Engineering and Digital Design at the University of Kent, with interests in image analysis, computer vision, handwriting analysis, biometric processing, neural architectures and medical image processing.
