Alex Alves Freitas
Also known as A Freitas, A. A. Freitas, A. Freitas, A.A. Freitas, Alex A Freitas, Alex A. Freitas, Alex Freitas
Alex Alves Freitas is a computer scientist whose machine-learning work connects data mining with biological questions. He earned a computer science PhD at the University of Essex in 1997 and published a 2002 book on evolutionary algorithms for knowledge discovery. Ant-Miner used ant-colony optimization to find classification rules, and his later research applied machine learning to bioinformatics and ageing. He coauthored a 2025 paper introducing Scikit-Longitudinal, a Python library for longitudinal classification. At the University of Kent, he is Professor of Computational Intelligence and Director of Research and Innovation.

Timeline
-
1997
A PhD in machine learning
At the University of Essex, he earns a computer science PhD in 1997 while researching machine learning, also called data mining.
-
2002
An evolutionary data-mining book
His 2002 book, Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery with Evolutionary Algorithms, brings evolutionary algorithms together with data mining.
-
2002
The Ant-Miner algorithm
The 2002 Ant-Miner paper introduces an ant-colony-based algorithm for extracting classification rules from data; Freitas coauthors it with Rafael Parpinelli and Heitor Lopes.
-
2005
Machine learning for life sciences
From about 2005, his research focuses on machine-learning methods for bioinformatics and life-sciences data, including protein-function prediction and analysis of ageing-related genes and proteins.
-
2006
Unordered Ant-Miner rules
With James Smaldon, he introduces Unordered Rule Set Ant-Miner in 2006; it produces classification rules that can be interpreted independently.
-
2011
An ageing research MPhil
In 2011, he earns a research-oriented MPhil in Biological Sciences at the University of Liverpool, studying the biology of ageing with machine learning and bioinformatics.
