Julián Fiérrez

Also known as Julián Fiérrez Aguilar, Julian Fierrez

Julián Fiérrez is a biometrics researcher and a full professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), and an ELLIS Fellow in the ELLIS Unit Madrid. His 2006 doctorate at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, supervised by Javier Ortega-Garcia, adapted the fusion of signature, voice and fingerprint systems to individual users and to biometric quality. After a Marie Curie fellowship at Michigan State University from 2007 to 2009, he became an associate professor at UAM in 2010 and received the EURASIP Best PhD Award in 2012 and the IAPR Young Biometrics Investigator Award in 2017. In 2020, he coauthored DeepFakes and Beyond, a survey of face manipulation and its detection, and his 2026 papers address fake identity documents and bias in face biometrics.

Timeline

  1. 2001–2006

    A PhD on biometric fusion

He earns an MSc in 2001 and a PhD in 2006 in telecommunications engineering at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, and moves to the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid in 2004. His 2006 thesis, Adapted Fusion Schemes for Multimodal Biometric Authentication, supervised by Javier Ortega-Garcia, adapts the score fusion of signature, voice and fingerprint systems to individual users and to biometric quality, with Support Vector Machines among its methods. In 2006, he receives the EBF European Biometric Industry Award.

  2. 2007–2009

Marie Curie fellow at Michigan State

From 2007 to 2009, he is a visiting researcher at Michigan State University under a Marie Curie fellowship. In August 2008, he gives a talk there on intelligent enrollment in biometrics, with case studies in keystroke and signature biometrics.

  3. 2010–2012

    Associate professor at UAM

He becomes an associate professor at UAM in 2010. In 2012, he receives the EURASIP Best PhD Award.

  4. 2015–2017

    IAPR Young Biometrics Investigator Award

The Spanish Royal Academy of Engineering gives him a medal in its 2015 Young Researcher Awards. In 2017, he receives the IAPR Young Biometrics Investigator Award, given every two years to a single researcher under 40 whose work has had a major impact in biometrics.

  5. 2016–2019

    Journal editor and congress chair

In 2016, he becomes an associate editor of Elsevier's Information Fusion and IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security, and in 2018 of IEEE Transactions on Image Processing. He serves as general chair of the IAPR Iberoamerican Congress on Pattern Recognition (CIARP 2018) and the Iberian Conference on Pattern Recognition and Image Analysis (IbPRIA 2019).

  6. 2020

    A survey of DeepFakes

In 2020, he coauthors DeepFakes and Beyond with Ruben Tolosana, Ruben Vera-Rodriguez, Aythami Morales and Javier Ortega-Garcia, a survey in Information Fusion of face manipulation methods and their detection. He joins the ELLIS Society in 2020.

  7. Since 2022

    Full professor and ELLIS Fellow

He becomes a full professor at UAM in 2022, in the Department of Electronic and Communications Technology and its BiDA-Lab research group. He is principal investigator of BiometricsAI, a UAM group whose handwriting biometrics technology is in use in Cecabank bank branches. He is an ELLIS Fellow in the ELLIS Unit Madrid.

  8. 2026

    Fake ID and face-bias papers

In 2026, he coauthors papers in Information Fusion on FakeIDet2, a benchmark and improved algorithms for privacy-aware detection of fake identity documents, and in Pattern Recognition on a comprehensive equity index (CEI) for bias evaluation in operational face biometrics.
