Christian Freksa
Christian Freksa was an AI researcher whose work included the Strong Spatial Cognition approach and temporal reasoning. Born in Offenhausen in 1950, he studied mathematics and informatics in Munich and artificial intelligence in San Francisco and Berkeley before earning a UC Berkeley AI PhD in 1981. He led AI research at the Technical University of Munich, became a professor in Hamburg and Bremen, and directed collaborative spatial cognition research. He became a EurAI Fellow in 2005, served as Scientific Director of the Bremen Spatial Cognition Center in 2019, and died in 2020.

Timeline
-
1950–1981
A Berkeley AI doctorate
He is born in Offenhausen in 1950, studies mathematics and informatics in Munich and artificial intelligence in San Francisco and Berkeley, then earns a UC Berkeley PhD in AI in 1981 under Lotfi Zadeh.
-
By 2002
AI research at Munich and Berkeley
Before joining the University of Bremen in 2002, his career includes postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry as a Thyssen Fellow and research at Berkeley's International Computer Science Institute. At the Technical University of Munich, he moves to Wilfried Brauer's chair of Theoretical Computer Science and Foundations of Artificial Intelligence in 1986 and heads the AI/Cognition group; he becomes Professor of Informatics at the University of Hamburg in 1991. He publishes “Temporal Reasoning Based on Semi-Intervals” in 1992.
-
2002–2003
Building a spatial cognition network
He becomes Professor of Cognitive Systems at the University of Bremen in 2002, initiates the International Spatial Cognition Quality Network, and directs the Bremen–Freiburg Spatial Cognition Research Center from 2003.
-
2005
A EurAI Fellowship
He becomes a Fellow of the European Association for Artificial Intelligence (EurAI) in 2005.
-
2019
Scientific Director at BSCC
The German Research Foundation funds SFB/TR 8 Spatial Cognition between 2003 and 2015, and he serves as its spokesperson for many years. In 2019, he is Scientific Director of the Bremen Spatial Cognition Center, where he and his colleagues study spatial cognition. His Strong Spatial Cognition approach models the interaction of intelligent beings and technical systems with their surroundings.

2020
Death in 2020
He dies in 2020 after serving as director of the Bremen Spatial Cognition Center and Professor of Cognitive Systems at the University of Bremen.
