Lotfi A. Zadeh
Lotfi A. Zadeh completed his Columbia doctorate in 1949. Zadeh and John Ragazzini worked on the z-transform in 1952, and Zadeh joined Berkeley’s electrical engineering faculty in 1959. Zadeh’s 1965 Fuzzy Sets paper defined membership through values between zero and one. The work supplied a mathematical way to represent graded categories and later supported research in logic, expert systems and AI. Zadeh founded and chaired the Berkeley Initiative in Soft Computing. His research connected fuzzy sets with linguistics, decision analysis, control and neural networks. He died on 6 September 2017.
