Rainer Blatt
Rainer Blatt is an experimental physicist who builds trapped-ion quantum computers, which may grow to run machine-learning tasks. He was born in Idar-Oberstein, earned a doctorate at Mainz in 1981, completed habilitation at Hamburg in 1988, and moved from Göttingen to an experimental-physics professorship at Innsbruck in 1995. His group demonstrated quantum teleportation and an eight-ion quantum byte, co-founded Alpine Quantum Technologies, and tested cycle benchmarking as trapped-ion systems scaled. He received the Herbert Walther Prize in 2023, moderated a Lindau AI in Physics session that included quantum machine learning in 2024, and received Bavaria's PRO MERITIS award in 2025. In 2026 he co-authored a framework for learning quantum dynamics; as of October 2026, he is Emeritus Research Director of the Blatt Lab at IQOQI.
Timeline
-
1952–1988
Physics from Mainz to Hamburg
He is born in Idar-Oberstein, Germany, in 1952 and studies physics at Mainz. He earns a doctorate in 1981, conducts research at JILA in Boulder and at institutions in Berlin and Hamburg, and completes an experimental-physics habilitation at Hamburg in 1988.
-
1994–2003
Professorships and IQOQI
At Göttingen, he becomes professor of physics in 1994; he takes an experimental-physics professorship at Innsbruck in 1995. In 2003, he becomes scientific director of IQOQI, the Austrian Academy of Sciences' Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information.
-
2004–2005
Teleportation and a quantum byte
In 2004, his group transfers quantum information from one atom to another in a controlled teleportation experiment. In November 2005, the team creates an eight-ion quantum byte.
-
2018–2019
A startup and a benchmark
In 2018, he co-founds Alpine Quantum Technologies (AQT) with Thomas Monz and Peter Zoller to develop a universal trapped-ion quantum computer. In 2019, he co-authors the cycle-benchmarking paper, which characterizes errors in large quantum computers. His Innsbruck team and Canadian collaborators apply the method to an ion-trap computer and find that error rates do not rise as the system scales; larger quantum computers may perform machine-learning tasks.
-
2023
A Herbert Walther Prize
At the World of Photonics Congress in 2023, he receives the Herbert Walther Prize for contributions to quantum optics and quantum information.
-
2024
AI in physics at Lindau
In 2024, he moderates the Lindau meeting's “Artificial Intelligence in Physics” session, which includes a presentation on quantum machine learning.
-
2025
A Bavarian science honor
In August 2025, Bavaria awards Blatt PRO MERITIS SCIENTIAE ET LITTERARUM for his contributions to quantum optics and quantum information.
-
As of October 2026
Learning quantum dynamics
In August 2026, he co-authors a framework that combines Hamiltonian and Lindbladian learning to estimate uncertainty in trapped-ion quantum simulations. As of October 2026, he is Emeritus Research Director of the Blatt Lab at IQOQI.
