Joachim M. Buhmann
Also known as Joachim Buhmann
Pattern recognition and machine learning have been at the core of Joachim Buhmann's research. He studied physics in Munich, earning a PhD in 1988, and held a chair in practical computer science at Bonn from 1992 to 2003. In 1993 he and Thomas Hofmann published a data clustering paper at NIPS, and in 2004 he co-wrote a Neural Computation paper on stability-based validation of clustering solutions. He joined ETH Zurich in October 2003 and served as vice rector for study programmes from 2014 to 2018, and the International Association for Pattern Recognition named him a Fellow in 2020. As of October 2026, he is a professor emeritus who holds academic leadership of the new ETH campus in Heilbronn, Germany.
