Pierre A. Devijver
Also known as Pierre Devijver
Pierre A. Devijver was a telecommunications engineer and one of the founders of statistical pattern recognition, who applied it to speech and image interpretation. He graduated from the Royal Military Academy of Brussels in 1962, left the Belgian army for the Philips Research Laboratory in Brussels, and took charge of its pattern recognition research. He earned a PhD at the University of Paris VI in 1977 and wrote Pattern Recognition: A Statistical Approach with Josef Kittler, published in 1982. He was President of the International Association for Pattern Recognition (IAPR) from 1986 to 1988, became Scientific Director at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télécommunications in Brest in 1989, was named an IAPR Fellow in 1994, and died in Brest in 1996; the IAPR's Technical Committee on Statistical Pattern Recognition set up the Pierre Devijver Award Lecture in his memory.
