Researcher

Walter G. Kropatsch

Walter G. Kropatsch is a computer vision researcher whose work spans image processing, pattern recognition and graph-based representations. He earned a PhD for satellite-image registration at the Technical University of Graz, completed a habilitation on image pyramids and curves, and led TU Wien's Pattern Recognition and Image Processing group from 1990 to 2021. His IAPR service included committee work and the presidency from 2004 to 2006; he became an IAPR Fellow in 1994 and received the Distinguished Service Award in 2026. He is an emeritus professor in TU Wien's Virtual and Augmented Reality unit, with research interests in graph-based representations, cognitive vision and image processing.

Timeline

  1. 1953–1991

    PhD on satellite image registration

Born in Leibnitz, Austria, in 1953, he earns a Maître d'Informatique from the University of Grenoble in 1976 and a PhD at the Technical University of Graz in 1982 on registration of satellite images with maps, with Johannes Moik as his advisor. In 1991, he completes a habilitation at the University of Innsbruck on image pyramids and curves. Before 1990, he holds research posts at the University of Maryland's Center for Automation Research and at the University of Innsbruck.

  2. 1984–2011

    IAPR committee leadership

He begins IAPR service in 1984 as Austria's representative on its Governing Board and serves through 2011. He chairs the Remote Sensing technical committee from 1986 to 1990 and the Graph-Based Representations committee as founding chair from 1998 to 2000. He serves as IAPR president from 2004 to 2006.

  3. 1990–2021

    Professor and PRIP director

From 1990 to 2021, he is a full professor and director of the Pattern Recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) group at Vienna University of Technology.

  4. 1994

    An IAPR fellowship

In 1994, he becomes an IAPR Fellow for contributions to image processing and remote sensing and service to the IAPR.

  5. 2011

    Graph pyramids for cohomology

In 2011, he coauthors “Invariant Representative Cocycles of Cohomology Generators using Irregular Graph Pyramids.” The paper presents cohomology for structural pattern recognition and an algorithm to compute representative cocycles.

  6. 2020–2024

    Imaging plant responses

From 2020 to 2024, his projects include “Water's gateway to heaven,” which studies transient stomatal responses in plant leaves through 3D imaging and modeling. The Vienna Science and Technology Fund supports the project.

  7. 2026

    The IAPR Distinguished Service Award

In 2026, he receives the IAPR Distinguished Service Award for more than four decades of service through the association's committees.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus professor at TU Wien

As of October 2026, he is an emeritus professor in TU Wien's Virtual and Augmented Reality unit, with research interests in graph-based representations, cognitive vision and image processing.
