Piero P. Bonissone
Piero P. Bonissone’s 1979 Berkeley dissertation examined linguistic approximation in system analysis under Lotfi Zadeh. His later industrial work covered fuzzy logic, machine learning and approximate reasoning. Bonissone retired from GE Global Research on 1 April 2014 after serving as Chief Scientist and Coolidge Fellow. He advised Schlumberger on analytics from December 2014 to January 2017. His research interests include equipment prognostics, model ensembles and the full life cycle of intelligent systems. In 2023, Bonissone co-chaired IEEE CAI and worked as an independent analytics consultant.

-
1979
Linguistic approximation at Berkeley
Bonissone wrote The Problem of Linguistic Approximation in System Analysis at Berkeley. Lotfi Zadeh advised him, and he completed the PhD dissertation in 1979.
-
GE career through 1 April 2014
Machine learning for industrial systems
Bonissone retired from GE Global Research on 1 April 2014 after serving as Chief Scientist and Coolidge Fellow. His work covered machine learning, fuzzy logic and approximate reasoning, with interests in asset health and decision systems.
-
December 2014–January 2017
Analytics across a model’s life cycle
He advised Schlumberger on advanced analytics from December 2014 through January 2017. His work supported equipment health, forecasting and reliability, plus project evaluation, deployment and model maintenance.
