Christian Wellekens
Also known as Wellekens Christian, Christian J. Wellekens
Christian Wellekens is a speech-recognition researcher whose work showed how neural networks could support automatic speech recognition. Born in Ukkel, he trained in electrical engineering at UCL and completed a doctorate at EPFL before joining Philips Research in Brussels. He became a professor at EURECOM and edited the ISCA newsletter for more than 23 years. With members of the Divine project, he received a 2009 Best Paper Award for a speech-variability review; ISCA awarded him its service medal in 2018 and named him a Fellow in 2019. He earned a philosophy master's at UCL in 2013; as of July 2025, he is an emeritus professor.
Timeline
-
1942–1974
Early training and work
Born in Ukkel in 1942, he earns an electrical engineering technician qualification at UCL in 1965 and a doctorate in technical sciences at EPFL in 1974. He begins his career at MBLE in Brussels.
-
1968
Speech research at Philips
In 1968, he joins Philips Research Laboratory in Brussels and works on analog and digital filters. He turns to speech processing and demonstrates the effectiveness of artificial neural networks for speech recognition.
-
1989–1992
From Bellcore to EURECOM
He spends a sabbatical at Bellcore in 1989–1990, joins L.H.S. in 1991, and becomes a professor at EURECOM in 1992.
-
2002–2025
Editing ISCApad
He takes over as editor-in-chief of the ISCA newsletter in 2002 and edits 282 issues over more than 23 years. In August 2025, the newsletter changes its format, name, and editor-in-chief.
-
2009
A Best Paper Award
At Interspeech in 2009, he and members of the Divine project receive a Best Paper Award for the review “Automatic speech recognition and speech variability: A review.”
-
2013
Philosophy at UCL
He earns a master's in philosophy at UCL in 2013 and focuses on German idealism, especially Hegel.
-
2018–2019
An ISCA medal and fellowship
At Interspeech in 2018, he receives the ISCA Medal for Special Service for his ISCApad work. ISCA names him a Fellow in 2019 for his neural-network contributions to automatic speech recognition and speech-science education.
-
July 2025
Emeritus professor
In July 2025, he ends his ISCApad editorship as an emeritus professor and says he retired in 2007.
