Researcher

Jean-Claude Simon

Jean-Claude Simon was a computer-science professor whose work in artificial intelligence and pattern recognition led to software for reading handwriting. He studied engineering at École Polytechnique, earned a physics doctorate, and moved from industrial research at CSF to university teaching. At UPMC, he founded a graduate degree in AI and pattern recognition; in 1980, France's president asked him to study computing in education. He led the IAPR, helped establish conferences for handwriting and document analysis, and founded A2iA, whose check-reading system used neural networks and HMMs. The IAPR named him a Fellow in 1994 and gave him its 1998 King-Sun Fu Prize; he died in 2000.

Timeline

  1. 1944–1967

    From physics to computing

Simon trained at École Polytechnique (class of 1944) and earned a physics doctorate in 1951. He worked at CSF from 1949 to 1967.

  2. 1967–1989

    Teaching AI at UPMC

At UPMC, he became a professor in programming and applied mathematics, with work in AI and pattern recognition. In 1970, he founded the university's graduate diploma in those fields. In 1980, President Valéry Giscard d'Estaing asked him to lead a study on computing in education.

  3. 1978–1988

    Leading the IAPR

He represented France on the IAPR Governing Board for ten years. He served as president from 1982 to 1984 and past president from 1984 to 1986.

  4. 1990–1991

    Conferences and a company

He helped establish the International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition in 1990 and the International Conference on Document Analysis and Recognition in 1991. He founded A2iA in September 1991 to develop automated handwriting-recognition software.

  5. Since 1993

    Reading French bank checks

A2iA developed a complete system for reading French check amounts with neural networks and HMMs.

  6. 1994

    An IAPR fellowship

The IAPR named him a Fellow for contributions to pattern recognition and leadership in the association.

  7. 1998

    A prize for handwriting recognition

The IAPR awarded him the King-Sun Fu Prize in Brisbane for work on automated recognition of handwritten words and lifelong leadership in pattern recognition.

  8. 2000

    A long service ends

Simon died in 2000 after more than 25 years of service to the IAPR.
