Luigi Pietro Cordella
Also known as Luigi Cordella, Luigi P. Cordella
Luigi Pietro Cordella was a computer scientist whose work joined pattern recognition, image analysis and data-driven artificial intelligence. At Federico II, he taught physics and computer engineering, served as a full professor, directed a department, coordinated doctoral programs and helped found a data-driven subsymbolic AI school. His research included inductive learning for shape descriptions, graph matching and computer vision for prosthetic control; he also led GIRPR and served on IAPR's Governing Board. He received an IAPR Fellowship in 1996 and died in 2024.
Timeline
-
1965–1983
At L'Aquila and the CNR
He works at the University of L'Aquila from 1965 to 1969 and at the Institute of Cybernetics of Italy's National Research Council from 1970 to 1983.
-
1971–2009
Teaching and AI at Federico II
From 1971 to 1982, he teaches General Physics I and II at Federico II's engineering faculty; from 1983 to 2009, he teaches computer engineering courses. He is a full professor of computer science foundations, directs the Department of Computer Science and Systems from 1989 to 1992, and coordinates the PhD in Computer and Automation Engineering and Federico II's Information Engineering doctoral school from 1994 to 2009. His research spans structural pattern recognition, shape analysis, document recognition, neural networks and evolutionary computation, and he helps found the university's data-driven subsymbolic AI school.
-
1996
An IAPR Fellowship
The IAPR names him a Fellow in 1996 for contributions to image analysis and service to the association.
-
2000–2004
President of GIRPR
From 2000 to 2004, he serves as president of GIRPR, the Italian Association of Pattern Recognition. He also sits on IAPR's Governing Board.
-
2001
Inductive learning for shape descriptions
In 2001, he coauthors “Prototyping Structural Shape Descriptions by Inductive Learning” with Pasquale Foggia, Carlo Sansone, Francesco Tortorella and Mario Vento for the fourth International Workshop on Visual Form.
-
2004
Graph matching for large graphs
In 2004, he coauthors “A (sub)graph isomorphism algorithm for matching large graphs” with Pasquale Foggia, Carlo Sansone and M. Vento in IEEE Transactions on Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence.
-
2023
Computer vision for a prosthesis
In 2023, he coauthors “A Semiautonomous Control Strategy Based on Computer Vision for a Hand-Wrist Prosthesis” with Gianmarco Cirelli, Christian Tamantini and Francesca Cordella.
-
2024
Death in 2024
He dies in 2024 after serving as a full professor at Federico II and helping found its data-driven subsymbolic AI school.
