Stefano Levialdi
Also known as Esteban Levialdi, Stefano Levialdi Ghiron
Born in 1936, Stefano Levialdi was an Italian computer scientist whose work connected pattern recognition and parallel image processing with visual languages and human-computer interaction. He earned a telecommunications engineering degree in Buenos Aires, taught electronics in Genoa and led the CNR Image Processing Group near Naples. At Bari and Sapienza, he became a computer science professor, designed Sapienza's curriculum and started the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing with Shi-Kuo Chang. IEEE, IAPR and VL/HCC fellowships recognized his work; he later held a Chair of Excellence in Madrid, coauthored 3C Vision, retired in 2010 and died in 2015.
Timeline
-
1936–1960
Early engineering and Marconi
Born in 1936, he graduates in Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Buenos Aires in 1959. In 1960, he wins a scholarship to Marconi Wireless in Chelmsford, UK.
-
1961–1965
Pattern recognition in Genoa
He lectures on Electronics in the School of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences at the University of Genoa. He spends five years at the Institute of Physics there from 1961 to 1965. A university group he meets in Genoa is researching pattern recognition and building PAPA, a machine that learns to recognize patterns after brief training.
-
1968–1981
Parallel image processing at CNR
In 1968, the Laboratory of Cybernetics opens near Naples, and he leads its Image Processing Group for 13 years as a researcher at the Italian National Research Council (CNR). The group designs parallel algorithms for shrinking, skeletons and medial-axis transforms to outperform standard sequential methods, publishing more than 100 papers.
-
1981–1983
From Bari to Sapienza
In 1981, he wins a Chair of Computer Science at the University of Bari, where he becomes a full professor. He stays at Bari for two years and moves to Sapienza University of Rome in 1983.
-
1988–2008
Image-processing and HCI fellowships
In 1988, he receives the IEEE Fellowship for work on parallel image processing. In 1994, he becomes an IAPR Fellow for contributions to parallel-image-processing architectures and service to the association. In 2008, he becomes a VL/HCC Fellow for work in human-computer interaction and visual languages.
-
1989–1990
Computer science curriculum and journal
At Sapienza, he designs the Computer Science curriculum, which begins in 1989. In 1990, he starts the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing with Shi-Kuo Chang.
-
2008–2011
A Madrid chair and 3C Vision
He takes up a Chair of Excellence at Carlos III University of Madrid in November 2008 for a research stay in its Computer Science and Engineering Department through May 2009. He retires in November 2010 after 49 years at different universities. In 2011, he coauthors 3C Vision: Cues, Context and Channels with Virginio Cantoni and Bertrand Zavidovique, a book that discusses biological and artificial vision through visual cues, contexts and multiple channels.
-
2015
Death in 2015
He dies in 2015, an Italian computer scientist and full professor at Sapienza University of Rome.
