Researcher

Alberto Martelli

Alberto Martelli is an AI researcher whose work spans practical reasoning, agent protocols and reasoning about actions. He earned an electrical-engineering degree in Milan, worked at Italy's National Research Council in Pisa, and built a long academic career at the University of Turin. His projects addressed mechanized deduction and agent interaction, while later research applied answer-set programming to action reasoning with ontologies. He is a Fellow of ECCAI and is affiliated with the University of Turin as of October 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1967–1981

An engineering degree and Pisa research

He earns an electrical-engineering degree from the Politecnico of Milan in 1967 and works at the National Research Council's Istituto di Elaborazione dell'Informazione in Pisa from 1968 to 1981.

  2. 1981–1995

    Professor and department director

In 1981, he becomes a full professor of computer science at the University of Turin. He directs the Department of Computer Science from 1984 to 1989 and chairs its PhD program from 1988 to 1995.

  3. 1989–2005

    MEDLAR and PRIN projects

From 1989 to 1995, he leads Turin's group in the MEDLAR I and II project on mechanized deduction in practical-reasoning logics. In 2005, he coordinates a national PRIN project on specifying and verifying agent-interaction protocols. From 1989 to 1994, he is responsible for a CNR subproject on systems to support intellectual work.

  4. 2008

    A computational logic day

In 2008, a Turin event dedicates a day to him and computational logic.

  5. By 2012

    An ECCAI fellowship

By 2012, he is a Fellow of ECCAI, the European Artificial Intelligence Association.

  6. 2021

    Reasoning about actions with ontologies

In 2021, he and Laura Giordano and Daniele Theseider Dupré propose an answer-set approach to reasoning about actions with ontological knowledge in the lightweight EL description logic. Their method uses temporal answer sets to handle nondeterministic actions and causal rules.

  7. As of October 2026

    A University of Turin affiliation

As of October 2026, he is affiliated with the University of Turin.
