Kavita Ganesan

Kavita Ganesan is an AI researcher whose work spans opinion summarization, evaluation of generated summaries, and machine-learning systems for software discovery. She grew up in Malaysia, earned computer science degrees in Malaysia and at USC, and worked as an eBay software engineer while publishing AI research by 2005. Her research includes Opinosis, micropinion generation, and ROUGE 2.0; at GitHub, she developed Repo-Topix to suggest repository topics. She completed a computer science PhD at Illinois in 2013, founded Opinosis Analytics in 2018, and published The Business Case for AI in 2022, which won a 2023 Global Book Awards Gold Medal. She was invited to speak at Westminster University in 2025, presented University of Sydney workshops in 2026, and delivered a Business Focus keynote in September 2026; as of October 2026, she is Opinosis Analytics’ founder and Chief AI Strategist and Architect.

  1. By 2005

    From Malaysia to eBay

    She grows up in Malaysia, earns a computer science bachelor’s degree there, and moves to the United States for a master’s at USC, where she encounters AI. By 2005, she works as a software engineer at eBay while attending AI conferences and publishing research.

  2. 2010–2013

    Opinion summaries and an Illinois PhD

    In 2010, she coauthors Opinosis with Cheng Xiang Zhai and Jiawei Han, a graph-based method for abstractive summaries of highly redundant opinions. In 2012, she coauthors an unsupervised approach for ultra-concise opinion summaries. She completes a computer science PhD at Illinois in 2013 and works on AI problems at 3M and GitHub.

  3. July 2017

    GitHub topic suggestions

    At GitHub, she develops Repo-Topix, a topic-extraction framework that uses repository text, NLP, and supervised machine learning to suggest topics.

  4. 2018

    ROUGE 2.0 for summary evaluation

    In 2018, she introduces ROUGE 2.0, updated measures for evaluating machine-generated summaries and assessing synonym and topic coverage.

  5. 2018–2020

    Founding an AI consultancy

    She founds Opinosis Analytics, an AI consulting firm, in 2018. In 2020, she moves into consulting full time and expands her AI writing and speaking.

  6. 2022–2023

    The Business Case for AI

    In 2022, she publishes The Business Case for AI, a guide to AI strategy and practical business use. The book wins a Gold Medal in the Business Life category of the 2023 Global Book Awards.

  7. 2025–2026

    AI workshops and a keynote

    In 2025, she is invited to speak at Westminster University’s Small Business Conference. At the University of Sydney, she presents a workshop on AI opportunities and return on investment in July 2026 and an AI strategy workshop for business and supply chains in August 2026. In September 2026, she delivers a Business Focus keynote.
