Chengxiang Zhai

Also known as ChengXiang Zhai, C. Zhai, Cheng-xiang Zhai, Cheng Zhai

Chengxiang Zhai works on information retrieval, text mining, and intelligent information systems. He earned doctorates at Nanjing University and Carnegie Mellon, worked in industry, then built his academic career at Illinois. His work includes statistical language models for search, the BeeSpace system, a practical text mining book, and research on AI agents. ACM named him a Fellow in 2017, and SIGIR inducted him into its Academy and gave him the 2021 Gerard Salton Award. As of October 2026, he is Donald Biggar Willett Professor in Engineering at Illinois.

Timeline

  1. 1990

    A doctorate in computer science

He completes a PhD in computer science at Nanjing University.

  2. 1997–2002

    Language models enter search

He works at Clairvoyance Corp. from 1997 to 2000, then completes a doctorate in Language and Information Technologies at Carnegie Mellon in 2002 and joins Illinois faculty. There, he develops statistical language models for information retrieval that help drive their adoption in search engines.

  3. 2004–2010

    Searching biological literature

At Illinois, he develops statistical analysis and semantic indexing for BeeSpace, a five-year NSF project that helps scientists study honey-bee social behavior. With collaborators, he publishes BeeSpace question-answering (BSQA), a text mining system for insect biology that mines literature to answer questions about genes and behavior.

  4. 2015–2016

    A book and research leadership

With Sean Massung, he publishes the 2016 textbook Text Data Management and Analysis: A Practical Introduction to Information Retrieval and Text Mining. He serves as program co-chair for WWW 2015 and general co-chair for CIKM 2016.

  5. 2017

    An ACM fellowship

ACM names him a Fellow in 2017.

  6. 2021

    Honored by SIGIR

The ACM SIGIR Academy inducts him into its inaugural class. SIGIR awards him the 2021 Gerard Salton Award for significant and sustained contributions to information retrieval and data science.

  7. 2025–2026

    Information retrieval meets agents

His 2025 SIGIR paper presents a new perspective on information retrieval for artificial general intelligence. In 2026, he publishes a SIGIR paper on a general intelligent information agent, with its framework, models, and evaluation.

  8. As of October 2026

    Research leadership at Illinois

He is Donald Biggar Willett Professor in Engineering at the Siebel School of Computing and Data Science at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, with joint appointments in information sciences, genomic biology, and statistics. He is also America Editor of the Springer Information Retrieval Book Series.
