Mario Rodriguez

Mario Rodriguez is GitHub's Chief Product Officer, and he leads the GitHub Product team. His AI work centers on GitHub Copilot, which he took on in January 2023 along with the company's AI strategy. Before that, he joined Team Foundation Server as a program manager in 2005, after work as a test engineer on Xbox games. In 2018 he joined GitHub as part of Microsoft's acquisition, and he traced Copilot's origins to an internal paper circulated in August 2020. Copilot's general availability followed in June 2022, and in March and April 2026 he announced changes to its data use and billing.

  1. 2005

    Program manager for Team Foundation Server

    In 2005 he joins Team Foundation Server as a program manager, after work as a test engineer on Xbox games like Forza Motorsport.

  2. 2018

    Joining GitHub after the acquisition

    As part of the Microsoft acquisition, he joins GitHub in 2018, and he then works on enterprise products, GitHub Issues, and Projects.

  3. August 2020

    An internal paper on Copilot

    His account of Copilot starts with an internal paper circulated in August 2020.

  4. 2021–2022

    Copilot's general availability

    Copilot reaches a technical preview in 2021, and general availability follows in June 2022.

  5. January 2023

    Leading Copilot and AI strategy

    Starting in January 2023, he takes on the Copilot team and GitHub's AI strategy.

  6. March 2026

    A Copilot data policy update

    In a March 2026 post, he announces model training on Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ interaction data, unless users opt out.

  7. April 2026

    Usage-based Copilot billing

    Copilot usage consumes GitHub AI Credits from June 2026, as he announces in April 2026.
