Researcher

Kavita Bala

Kavita Bala is a computer scientist at Cornell University whose research on computer vision and graphics spans physically based rendering, material recognition and visual search. After a B.Tech. at IIT Bombay in 1992 and a Ph.D. at MIT in 1999, she joined Cornell as a postdoctoral researcher and became an assistant professor in 2002. With her doctoral student Sean Bell, she co-founded GrokStyle, a visual recognition company whose technology IKEA integrated into an augmented reality application and which Facebook acquired in 2019. She was named an ACM Fellow in 2019, received the SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award in 2020 and was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2025. After chairing computer science from 2018 and serving as inaugural dean of the Cornell Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, she is Cornell's 17th provost, a role she has held since January 2025.

Timeline

  1. 1992–1999

Degrees from IIT Bombay and MIT

She earns a B.Tech. at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay in 1992. In 1999, she completes a master's degree and a Ph.D. in computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

  2. 1999–2002

    Postdoc in Cornell's graphics program

She joins Cornell in 1999 as a postdoctoral researcher in the Program of Computer Graphics led by Donald P. Greenberg. In 2002, she becomes an assistant professor of computer science.

  3. 2014

    Intrinsic Images in the Wild

Together with Sean Bell and Noah Snavely, she coauthors "Intrinsic Images in the Wild", presented at SIGGRAPH 2014. She and Snavely co-advise Bell, then a Cornell doctoral student, and the work helps train computer vision models to tell objects apart from their optical properties and lighting in photographs.

  4. 2018–2024

    Chair and inaugural dean

She chairs Cornell's Department of Computer Science from 2018 to 2020. In 2020, a gift from Ann S. Bowers creates the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science, and she becomes its inaugural dean. As dean, she increases the faculty by 30% and serves as lead dean of the Cornell AI Initiative.

  5. By 2019

    Co-founding GrokStyle

With her doctoral student Sean Bell, she co-founds GrokStyle, a visual recognition company, and serves as its chief scientist. IKEA integrates the technology into an augmented reality application, and Facebook acquires the company in 2019.

  6. 2019–2020

    ACM Fellow and SIGGRAPH award

The ACM names her a Fellow in 2019 for contributions to physically based rendering and perceptually based scene understanding. In 2020, SIGGRAPH gives her its Computer Graphics Achievement Award for work on scalable rendering, material modeling, perception for graphics and visual recognition, including Lightcuts and the book Advanced Global Illumination.

  7. 2025–2026

Academy election and Test of Time

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences elects her in 2025. SIGGRAPH gives her a Test of Time Award in 2025 for "Learning Visual Similarity for Product Design With Convolutional Neural Networks" and a second in 2026 for "Intrinsic Images in the Wild".

  8. Since January 2025

    Provost of Cornell

She becomes the 17th provost of Cornell University in January 2025, a five-year appointment announced in September 2024. As provost, she is the university's chief academic officer and chief budget officer, and she remains a professor of computer science with research in visual recognition and search.
