Antonio Criminisi
Antonio Criminisi is a computer-vision researcher whose AI work spans cancer imaging, decision forests and mixed-reality avatars. He earned an Electronics Engineering degree at Palermo and completed a computer-vision doctorate at Oxford in December 1999. His thesis won the 2000 British Computer Society Distinguished Dissertation Award, and he joined Microsoft Research in 2000. He led Project InnerEye for cancer imaging, and his coauthored Deep Neural Decision Forests won the 2015 ICCV Marr Prize; he later led science and product development for Amazon Halo Body. Since 2022, he has led Microsoft Mesh Labs as Partner Research Lead; as of October 2026, he is Vice President of Applied Science at the Cambridge Mixed Reality & AI lab.
Timeline
-
By 1999
A computer vision doctorate
He earns an Electronics Engineering degree from the University of Palermo before completing a computer-vision doctorate at Oxford in December 1999. In 1998, he coauthors Duality, Rigidity and Planar Parallax, a paper on geometric relations between views of points.
-
2000
A dissertation prize
His thesis, Accurate Visual Metrology from Single and Multiple Uncalibrated Images, wins the British Computer Society Distinguished Dissertation Award in 2000.
-
2000–2013
Joining Microsoft Research
He joins Microsoft Research Cambridge as a Visiting Researcher in 2000, moves to Redmond in 2001, and returns to Cambridge in 2002. In 2013, he becomes Principal Researcher and leads the medical image analysis team.
-
2014–2019
Project InnerEye
He leads Project InnerEye from 2014 to 2019, developing machine-learning tools for cancer treatment and radiotherapy planning. The system helps radiologists identify and analyze 3-D images of cancerous tumors.
-
2015
Deep Neural Decision Forests
His coauthored Deep Neural Decision Forests wins the ICCV Marr Prize in 2015. The model combines classification trees with representation learning from deep convolutional networks.
-
2019–2022
Amazon Halo Body
He joins Amazon Cambridge in May 2019 and leads science, design and product development for Halo Body, a computer-vision product that uses a phone scan to calculate body composition and estimate cardio-metabolic health risks.
-
As of October 2026
Vice President of Applied Science
He returns to Microsoft in June 2022 as Partner Research Lead for Mesh Labs in Cambridge and Zurich. As of October 2026, he is Vice President of Applied Science at the Cambridge Mixed Reality & AI lab; the team builds AI for Microsoft Mesh, including avatars, holoportation and 3-D digitization.
