Joachim Denzler
Joachim Denzler is a computer vision professor at Friedrich Schiller University Jena whose research runs from real-time computer vision to AI for Earth and climate science. Born in Hof, he earned his PhD at Erlangen-Nuremberg in 1997 with doctoral work on computer vision and completed his habilitation there in 2003. After a professorship at Passau, he took Jena's chair of digital image processing in 2005, founded the Michael Stifel Center Jena for Data-driven and Simulation Sciences, and coauthored a 2019 Nature paper on deep learning for Earth system science. An ERC Synergy Grant followed in 2020, and in November 2021 he became co-director of the new ELLIS Unit Jena with Markus Reichstein. Today he heads the Computer Vision Group in Jena and is an ELLIS Fellow and a director of ELLIS Unit Jena.
Timeline
-
1992–1997
Computer vision at Erlangen
Born in Hof, he earns a computer science degree in 1992 and a PhD in 1997 at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg, where he works as a researcher at the Pattern Recognition Lab. His doctoral work on computer vision yields a PC method that lets a computer decide in real time on the subject and composition of an image.
-
1995–2003
Rochester and a habilitation
He does research stays at the University of Maryland in 1995 and the University of Rochester in 1999–2000. During a US stay and his 2003 habilitation in practical computer science at Erlangen, he turns this method into a mathematical formula that lets computers choose a good focal length.
-
2004–2005
Chair of digital image processing
He becomes professor for computer vision at Friedrich Schiller University Jena in 2004. In February 2005, Jena appoints the former University of Passau professor to its chair of digital image processing, and he turns down a parallel offer from the University of Duisburg-Essen.
-
2015–2020
The Michael Stifel Center Jena
From 2015 to 2018, he is founder and managing director of the Michael Stifel Center Jena for Data-driven and Simulation Sciences. He sits on the Scientific Advisory Board of Jenoptik AG from 2016 to 2020.
-
February 2019
Deep learning for Earth system science
In February 2019, he coauthors "Deep learning and process understanding for data-driven Earth system science" in Nature, with Markus Reichstein as first author. The paper sets out a strategy for hybrid models that combine machine learning with physical modeling to improve climate and Earth system models.
-
2020
An ERC Synergy Grant
He receives an ERC Synergy Grant in 2020 and joins the board of the Thuringian Center for Learning Systems and Robotics.
-
2021–2023
Co-directing ELLIS Unit Jena
ELLIS Unit Jena joins the ELLIS network in November 2021, bringing together Friedrich Schiller University Jena, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). He co-directs it with Markus Reichstein and also serves as director of the DLR Institute of Data Science. Its kick-off in January 2023 draws more than 140 experts in AI and machine learning for Earth and climate sciences.
-
As of October 2026
Head of Computer Vision Group Jena
He heads the Computer Vision Group at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, which develops methods for automatic analysis of camera images, LiDAR scans and time-series data. He is an ELLIS Fellow and a director of ELLIS Unit Jena. In June 2026, he presents at the public launch of GENAI-X, a Carl-Zeiss-Stiftung project on trustworthy AI for floods, droughts and landslides.
