Researcher

Heinrich Niemann

Heinrich Niemann is a German computer scientist who founded the Pattern Recognition Lab at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), the first German university to dedicate a chair to pattern recognition. After earning a Dr.-Ing. at the Technical University of Hannover in 1969, he worked at a Fraunhofer institute in Karlsruhe and taught at the Fachhochschule Gießen-Friedberg. From 1975 to 2005 he held the Erlangen chair, wrote textbooks such as Klassifikation von Mustern, and coauthored speech research on the German Sundial train timetable dialogue system and the multilingual prosody module of the Verbmobil translation system. IAPR named him a Fellow in 2002 for contributions to pattern recognition with applications to speech processing and image understanding, and the universities of Bielefeld and Lübeck awarded him honorary doctorates in 2011 and 2024. Today he is a professor emeritus at FAU.

Timeline

  1. 1940–1969

    A doctorate in Hannover

He is born in Landeshut in September 1940 and studies at the Technical University of Hannover. There he earns a Dr.-Ing. in 1969 with a dissertation on a theory for the quantitative description and recognition of patterns.

  2. 1967–1975

    From Fraunhofer to Gießen-Friedberg

From 1967 to 1972, he works at the Fraunhofer Institute for Information Processing in Technology and Biology in Karlsruhe. Between 1973 and 1975, he is a professor at the Fachhochschule Gießen-Friedberg.

  3. 1974–1990

    Textbooks on pattern analysis

He publishes Methoden der Mustererkennung in 1974, then Pattern Analysis in Springer's Information Sciences series in 1982 and Klassifikation von Mustern in 1983. In 1987, he coauthors Künstliche Intelligenz in Bild- und Sprachanalyse, a book on AI in image and speech analysis, and in 1990 a second edition of his Springer book appears as Pattern Analysis and Understanding.

  4. 1975–2005

    Germany's first pattern recognition chair

In 1975, he becomes the founding head of the Chair of Pattern Recognition at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg, the first German university to dedicate a chair to this field. He leads it as professor of computer science until September 2005, when Joachim Hornegger takes over.

  5. 1988–2005

    Knowledge processing at FORWISS

From 1988 to 2003, he heads the Knowledge Processing research group at the Bavarian Research Center for Knowledge Based Systems (FORWISS) and sits on its board of directors. He also serves as speaker of SFB 603, "Model-based Analysis and Visualization of Complex Scenes and Sensordata", from 1997 to 2005.

  6. 1993–2000

    Spoken dialogue and Verbmobil

In 1993, he coauthors an evaluation of the German Sundial demonstrator, a spoken dialogue system for intercity train timetable inquiries whose Erlangen word recognizer reaches over 92% word accuracy. Within the Verbmobil speech-to-speech translation project, he coauthors work on dialog act classification with the help of prosody in 1996 and a 2000 chapter on a multilingual prosody module for German, English and Japanese.

  7. 2002–2024

    IAPR Fellow and honorary doctorates

He becomes an IAPR Fellow in 2002 for contributions to pattern recognition with applications to speech processing and image understanding, and DAGM, the German Association for Pattern Recognition, appoints him an honorary member at its 2005 symposium in Vienna. Bielefeld University's Faculty of Technology awards him an honorary doctorate in May 2011, and the University of Lübeck confers another in February 2024.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor emeritus at Erlangen

He is a professor emeritus and former chairholder at FAU's Chair of Computer Science 5 (Pattern Recognition). In October 2025, as FAU marks 50 years of the Pattern Recognition Lab, chair holder Andreas Maier calls the statistical methods developed by people like Niemann a basis for the current AI boom.
