Elmar Nöth
Also known as Elmar Noeth, Noeth Elmar
Elmar Nöth is a computer scientist whose work spans spoken dialogue systems and automatic analysis of pathological speech. He studied at FAU and MIT from 1977, earned a computer-science diploma in 1985 and a doctorate in 1990, then became a full professor and speech-group head in 2008. His team co-developed Evar and FränKi and used deep learning to analyze orca calls in 2018 and 2019. His group began pathological-speech research in 2000, and ISCA named him a Fellow in 2023. His 2026 work uses spatio-temporal diffusion for speech-to-video synthesis in vocal-tract MRI, and he is a retired professor at FAU's Pattern Recognition Lab.

Timeline
-
1977–1990
Degrees at Erlangen
He studies at FAU and MIT from 1977, earns a computer-science Dipl.-Inf. at Erlangen in 1985, and completes a Dr.-Ing. there in 1990. He joins FAU's Pattern Recognition Lab as a researcher in 1985 and becomes assistant professor at the Institute for Pattern Recognition in 1990.
-
1990s–2000
Evar and FränKi
He co-develops Evar for German Rail enquiries and FränKi for local cinema listings at Erlangen's Pattern Recognition Institute in the early 1990s. In 1993, he leads development of the institute's first fully automatic telephone information system; in 2000, he helps found Sympalog to market the dialogue systems.
-
Since 2000
Pathological speech analysis
Since 2000, his group studies and evaluates pathological speech, building foundational research in the field.
-
2008–2014
Professor and speech-group head
In 2008, he becomes a full professor at FAU's Institute for Pattern Recognition and heads its speech group. In 2014, he becomes general chair of the Text, Speech and Dialogue conference.
-
2018–2019
Deep learning for orca calls
During the summers of 2018 and 2019, he and Christian Bergler spend several weeks on the North Pacific to analyze orca calls with deep learning.
-
2023
Retirement and an ISCA Fellowship
He retires from active duty at FAU's Pattern Recognition chair on September 30, 2022. ISCA names him a Fellow in 2023 for contributions to the analysis of pathological speech signals.
-
2026
Speech-to-video diffusion
In 2026, he coauthors a paper on speech-to-video synthesis using spatio-temporal diffusion for vocal tract MRI.
-
Since 2022
Retired professor at FAU
He retires in 2022 and is a retired professor at FAU's Pattern Recognition Lab.
