Bjorn Stevens
Bjorn Stevens is a climate researcher whose work connects clouds, atmospheric circulation and computational models. Stevens earned an atmospheric-science doctorate in 1996, held a postdoctoral position at NCAR, joined UCLA in 1999 and became a Max Planck director in 2008. His AI connection includes a 2021 presentation on using machine learning with storm-resolving Earth-system models. He has described machine learning as a way to extract and use information from expensive simulations. He later discussed hybrid AI and physics-based models.

Timeline
-
1996–1999
Atmospheric-science training
Stevens earned a doctorate at Colorado State in 1996, worked as a postdoctoral researcher at NCAR from 1996 to 1998 and held a Humboldt fellowship in Hamburg from 1998 to 1999.
-
1999–2008
UCLA and Max Planck
Stevens joined UCLA as an assistant professor in 1999 and was later promoted. He became director of the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in 2008. His research concerns clouds, circulation and how these processes shape climate.
-
8 September 2021
Machine learning for detailed climate models
Stevens presented on machine learning for a new generation of storm-resolving Earth-system models. He discussed extracting and using information from high-cost simulations.
-
January 2025
Hybrid models and climate computing
Stevens later discussed hybrid AI and physics-based models and data-driven approaches in climate research. His research focuses on clouds and simulation science. AI is one part of this wider scientific programme.
