Emile Mathieu
Emile Mathieu is a machine learning researcher whose work connects geometry with generative models for science and protein design. He studied mathematics, physics and computer science in France and earned a machine learning PhD at Oxford. His coauthored Riemannian Score-Based Generative Modelling won a 2022 NeurIPS Outstanding Paper award, and his 2023 work brought geometric priors to diffusion models for scientific data. Since February 2024, he is a Machine Learning Research Scientist at Xaira Therapeutics in London, developing generative models for antibody design.

Timeline
-
2011–2017
Education in France
In 2011, he completes the science-major French baccalauréat with a mathematics option in Nantes, then studies mathematics and physics in preparatory classes through 2013. He earns a science BSc at École des Ponts ParisTech in 2013–2014 and completes an MSc (I) in mathematics and computer science there in 2014–2015. From 2016 to 2017, he completes an MSc (II) in machine learning and computer vision through the MVA program at ENS Paris-Saclay.
-
2019
Facebook AI Research internship
In 2019, he works as a research intern at Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research in New York, extending normalizing flows to manifolds for climate science under Maximilian Nickel.
-
2021
An Oxford PhD
He completes a PhD in machine learning in Oxford's Department of Statistics under Yee Whye Teh in 2021.
-
August 2021
Oxford postdoctoral research
In August 2021, he starts a postdoctoral position in Oxford's Statistical Machine Learning Group under Arnaud Doucet.
-
July 2022–February 2024
Cambridge postdoctoral research
From July 2022 to February 2024, he works as a postdoctoral research associate in Cambridge's Department of Engineering with Richard Turner and José Miguel Hernández-Lobato. He studies diffusion models and flow matching for natural-science applications.
-
2022
A NeurIPS Outstanding Paper
In 2022, he coauthors Riemannian Score-Based Generative Modelling, which extends score-based models to Riemannian manifolds. The paper receives a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award.
-
2023
Geometric Neural Diffusion Processes
In 2023, he coauthors Geometric Neural Diffusion Processes, adding geometric priors to diffusion models for infinite-dimensional data. The method uses a symmetry-equivariant score network to model scalar and vector fields on synthetic and real-world weather data.

Since February 2024
Research scientist at Xaira
Since February 2024, he is a Machine Learning Research Scientist at Xaira Therapeutics in London, developing generative models for antibody design. In October 2026, Xaira lists him among the X-Design contributors in its report on de novo therapeutic antibody design.
