Bo Wang

Also known as 王波

Bo Wang is a computer scientist whose research applies machine learning to single-cell biology and medical imaging. He completed a Stanford computer-science PhD in 2017 and coauthored SIMLR, a framework for single-cell analysis. At the University of Toronto and UHN, he developed AI tools for viral-genome tracking and medical-image segmentation, received a Canada CIFAR AI Chair, and became UHN’s first Chief AI Scientist. His lab released scGPT, and he coauthored MedSAM in 2024; he joined Xaira in 2025 as senior vice president and head of biomedical AI. He is Xaira’s Chief AI Scientist as of October 2026, and his work includes X-Cell, the company’s first virtual cell model.

  1. 2017

    A Stanford PhD and SIMLR

    He completes a computer-science PhD at Stanford in 2017. He coauthors SIMLR, a similarity-learning framework for clustering and visualizing single-cell RNA-sequencing data.

  2. 2019

    Genentech and a CIFAR AI Chair

    After earning a master’s degree at the University of Toronto, he works as a senior AI consultant at Genentech. In 2019, he receives a Canada CIFAR AI Chair associated with the Vector Institute.

  3. June 2020–September 2020

    The COVID-19 Genotyping Tool

    In June 2020, he co-develops the COVID-19 Genotyping Tool with PhD student Hassaan Maan and researchers at McMaster University and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. The AI-enabled web app tracks SARS-CoV-2 genome evolution. In September 2020, he joins the University of Toronto as a joint tenure-track assistant professor in Laboratory Medicine & Pathobiology and Computer Science.

  4. 2021–2022

    Medical imaging and a Gairdner selection

    In 2021, his lab develops an AI tool that segments organs in seconds after training on millions of raw images and human-contoured examples. In 2022, the Gairdner Foundation selects him as an Early Career Investigator for an interpretable machine-learning pipeline that integrates single-cell multi-omics data.

  5. 2023

    Chief AI Scientist at UHN

    In September 2023, UHN appoints him as its first Chief Artificial Intelligence Scientist and co-lead of its AI Hub. Since 2019, he serves as Lead AI Scientist at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre.

  6. 2024

    scGPT and MedSAM

    In 2024, the Bo Wang Lab releases scGPT, a foundation model for analyzing large-scale single-cell multi-omics data. He also coauthors MedSAM, a foundation model for medical-image segmentation trained on 1,570,263 image-mask pairs across 10 imaging modalities and more than 30 cancer types.

  7. April 2025

    Biomedical AI at Xaira

    In April 2025, he joins Xaira Therapeutics as senior vice president and head of biomedical AI.

  8. Since July 2026

    Chief AI Scientist at Xaira

    In July 2026, Xaira promotes him to Chief AI Scientist. As of October 2026, he holds that role. His work includes X-Cell, the company’s first virtual cell model.
