Researcher

Maximilian Nickel

Maximilian Nickel is an AI researcher whose work spans relational learning, geometric representations, generative models and AI in complex social systems. He earned a computer science diploma with honors in 2009 and a PhD at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2013, and held a postdoctoral role at MIT. He coauthored RESCAL and Holographic Embeddings for relational and knowledge-graph data; Moser Flow applied generative modeling to manifolds and received a 2021 NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award. In 2024, he submitted No Free Delivery Service, which examined train-test evaluation in complex social systems and called for rigorous model validation. He is Research Director at Meta and serves on the UN Independent International Scientific Panel on AI.

Timeline

  1. 2009

    A computer science diploma

He earns a diploma with honors in computer science from Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 2009.

  2. 2011

    RESCAL for relational learning

In 2011, he coauthors A Three-Way Model for Collective Learning on Multi-Relational Data with Volker Tresp and Hans-Peter Kriegel. The paper presents RESCAL, a three-way tensor factorization for collective learning from relational data.

  3. 2013

    A PhD and MIT postdoc

In 2013, he earns a PhD summa cum laude from Ludwig Maximilian University's Department for Informatics under Volker Tresp. By 2013, he is a postdoctoral fellow with MIT's Laboratory for Computational and Statistical Learning, hosted at the Center for Biological and Computational Learning.

  4. 2015

    Holographic knowledge graph embeddings

In 2015, he posts Holographic Embeddings of Knowledge Graphs with Lorenzo Rosasco and Tomaso Poggio. HolE uses circular correlation to build compositional vector representations of whole knowledge graphs and supports link prediction.

  5. 2021

    Moser Flow wins an award

In 2021, he coauthors Moser Flow: Divergence-based Generative Modeling on Manifolds with Noam Rozen, Aditya Grover and Yaron Lipman. The paper introduces a continuous normalizing flow for data on complex manifolds and receives a NeurIPS Outstanding Paper Award.

  6. 2024

    No Free Delivery Service

In November 2024, he submits No Free Delivery Service, which examines limits of passive data collection in complex social systems. It argues that the train-test paradigm fails for widely considered inference settings and that rigorous model validation is needed to assess AI outcomes.

  7. As of October 2026

    Research Director at Meta

He is a Research Director at Meta, leading research on alignment and democratic governance of frontier AI. In February 2026, the General Assembly appoints him to the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI for a three-year term.
