Dov M. Gabbay

Also known as Dov Gabbay

Dov M. Gabbay is a researcher in logic and computer science whose work connects formal reasoning with artificial intelligence. He earned a Hebrew University PhD on non-classical logics in 1969, then worked at Stanford, Bar-Ilan, Imperial College and King's College London. He helped produce handbooks on logic in AI, coauthored a 2009 book on neural-symbolic reasoning, and coauthored a 2025 study of forgetting in abstract argumentation. He is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at King's College London.

Timeline

  1. 1945–1975

    A PhD and early posts

He is born in 1945 and grows up in Israel. He studies mathematics and physics at Hebrew University, completing a PhD on non-classical logics in 1969. He moves to Stanford in 1970 and returns to Bar-Ilan University in 1975.

  2. 1982–1998

    Logic at Imperial College

During a visit to Imperial College in 1982, he works with Bob Kowalski on Logic Programming and turns to logic in computer science. In 1983, he becomes Professor of Computing at Imperial College, where he stays for 15 years.

  3. 1992

    Handbooks for logic and AI

In 1992, he teams up with colleagues to produce handbooks on logic in computer science and logic in AI. The project begins a collection that systematizes logic across its interdisciplinary subdomains.

  4. 1998–2011

    Professor at King's College

In 1998, he joins King's College London as Professor of Computing, Professor of Philosophy, and Augustus De Morgan Professor of Logic. He becomes emeritus in 2011.

  5. 2001

    Humboldt Research Award

In 2001, a Humboldt Research Award supports his work on the logical and algorithmic foundations of goal-directed reasoning, with Jörg Siekmann at DFKI Saarbrücken as host.

  6. 2009

    Neural-symbolic reasoning

With Artur S. d’Avila Garcez and Luís C. Lamb, he coauthors Neural-Symbolic Cognitive Reasoning in 2009. The book presents neural-network models that integrate learning from experience with reasoning.

  7. 2025

    Forgetting in abstract argumentation

In 2025, he coauthors “Forgetting in Abstract Argumentation: Limits and Possibilities” in the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research. The paper studies desirable properties of forgetting operators and identifies limits across prominent argumentation semantics.

  8. As of October 2026

    Emeritus Professor at King's

As of October 2026, he is an Emeritus Professor of Computer Science at King's College London.
