Jörg Siekmann
Jörg Siekmann is an AI researcher whose work spans automated reasoning, mathematical proof tools, and adaptive mathematics learning. After training in carpentry and wood engineering, he earned an AI doctorate at Essex in 1976 and built deduction systems research in Karlsruhe. Kaiserslautern appointed him to Germany's first AI professorship in 1983; he helped establish DFKI, where he became its fifth employee in 1988. From 1991 to 2006, he led DFKI research while serving as a computer science professor at Saarland University; his work included LOUI's interface for Omega, ActiveMath mathematics tutoring, and e-learning leadership at CeLTech. He became a Fellow of the German Informatics Society in 2002 and one of ten figures in German AI history recognized in 2020; he is a senior professor and coordinator for digital education at Saarland University.
Timeline
-
1969–1980
From carpentry to deduction systems
After training in carpentry and wood engineering, he returns to school at Braunschweig-Kolleg in 1969 and studies mathematics and physics at Göttingen. At Essex, he earns a computer science master's in 1972 and an AI doctorate on unification theory in 1976 under Patrick Hayes. At Karlsruhe's Institute of Computer Science, he works as a research assistant and becomes a university assistant in 1980, building an AI group in deduction systems and helping establish Collaborative Research Centre 314.
-
1983–1988
Germany's first AI chair
In 1983, Kaiserslautern appoints him to Germany's first professorship in AI. He helps found DFKI with colleagues and serves as one of its three founding directors. In 1988, DFKI employs him as its fifth staff member; he builds its Deduction and Multiagent Systems division and establishes Springer's Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series.
-
1991–2006
Professor and research director
In 1991, he joins Saarland University as a professor of computer science and leads research at DFKI through 2006. He also serves as spokesperson for Collaborative Research Centre 378 on resource-adaptive cognitive processes.
-
1998–2004
Proof tools and math tutoring
In 1998, he coauthors LOUI, a distributed graphical interface for the interactive proof system Omega. With Erica Melis, he coauthors ActiveMath: An Intelligent Tutoring System for Mathematics in 2004.
-
2002
A GI fellowship
The German Informatics Society names him a Fellow in 2002.
-
2006–2014
CeLTech and logic leadership
He serves as scientific director of CeLTech from 2006 to 2014 and as vice chair of the International Federation on Computational Logic. In 2010, he represents CeLTech in a partnership with Saarland's University of Applied Sciences (HTW) on mathematics e-learning, linking DFKI's ActiveMath group with HTW's MathCoach group for university bridge courses.
-
2020
Ten figures in German AI history
In 2020, the German Informatics Society and Fraunhofer's IUK association recognize him among ten figures in German AI history for knowledge representation and reasoning.
-
As of October 2026
Digital education at Saarland
As of October 2026, he is a senior professor and coordinator for digital education at Saarland University. His research interests include AI, automated reasoning, unification theory, and mathematics e-learning.
