Deng-Ping Fan

Also known as Dengping FAN, Dengping Fan, 范登平

Deng-Ping Fan is a computer vision researcher whose work spans visual saliency, camouflaged object detection, and medical image segmentation. He introduced Structure-Measure in 2017, earned a Ph.D. from Nankai University in 2019, and held research roles at IIAI and ETH Zurich while contributing to DAVSOD, COD10K, SINet, PraNet, and Pyramid Vision Transformer. In 2025, he received MICCAI's Young Scientist Publication Impact Award for PraNet. He is an adjunct professor at the Shenzhen Loop Area Institute and a Full Professor and deputy director of Nankai University's Media Computing Lab; in 2026, he serves as an Area Chair for CVPR 2027.

Timeline

  1. 2017

    Structure-Measure as a saliency metric

In 2017, he and four coauthors introduce Structure-Measure, a foreground-map metric that evaluates region-aware and object-aware structural similarity.

  2. 2019

    A Nankai PhD and DAVSOD

In 2019, he earns a Ph.D. at Nankai University under Ming-Ming Cheng. At CVPR 2019, he coauthors the DAVSOD paper, a video saliency dataset with 226 videos and 23,938 frames.

  3. 2019–2021

    Team lead at IIAI

From 2019 to 2021, he leads IIAI-CV&Med as a research scientist (PI) and team lead, working with Ling Shao and Jianbing Shen.

  4. 2020

    Camouflaged object detection

In 2020, he and five coauthors define camouflaged object detection as finding objects blended into their surroundings, and introduce COD10K, a dataset of 10,000 images, and the Search Identification Network (SINet).

  5. 2020

    PraNet for polyp segmentation

He coauthors PraNet in 2020, a parallel reverse attention network for segmenting polyps in colonoscopy images.

  6. 2021–2023

    Postdoc at ETH and PVT

From 2021 to 2023, he works as a postdoctoral researcher at ETH Zurich with Luc Van Gool in its Computer Vision Lab. In 2021, he coauthors Pyramid Vision Transformer (PVT), a convolution-free backbone for dense prediction.

  7. 2025

    A MICCAI impact award

In 2025, he receives the MICCAI Young Scientist Publication Impact Award for PraNet, his MICCAI 2020 paper.

  8. Since 2025

    Professor at SLAI

Since 2025, he holds an adjunct professorship at the Shenzhen Loop Area Institute (SLAI) and is a Full Professor and deputy director of Nankai University's Media Computing Lab. In 2026, he serves as an Area Chair for CVPR 2027.
