Shengcai Liao

Shengcai Liao is an associate professor at United Arab Emirates University and founding director of its Computer Vision Lab. He earned a mathematics degree at Sun Yat-sen University, completed a PhD at CASIA, and worked as a postdoc at Michigan State before joining CASIA's faculty. His 2015 CVPR work on person re-identification introduced the LOMO feature representation and XQDA metric learning. After leading research at the Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence, he became an IAPR Fellow in 2024 and an IEEE Fellow in 2025.

  1. 2001–2012

    A mathematics degree and PhD

    He earns a mathematics B.S. at Sun Yat-sen University in 2005 and completes a PhD at CASIA in 2010. From 2010 to 2012, he works as a postdoc at Michigan State University.

  2. 2012–2018

    CASIA faculty and LOMO, XQDA

    He joins CASIA as an assistant professor in 2012 and becomes an associate professor in 2014. His 2015 CVPR paper on person re-identification introduces the LOMO feature representation and XQDA metric-learning method.

  3. 2018–2024

    Leading research at IIAI

    He joins the Inception Institute of Artificial Intelligence as a Lead Scientist in October 2018. From October 2021 to June 2024, he serves as Principal Scientist and Acting Director of R&D.

  4. 2019

    A state technology award

    In December 2019, he receives the Second Class Award of China's State Science and Technology Progress Award.

  5. 2024–2025

    UAEU post and fellow honors

    He joins UAEU as an associate professor in August 2024 and becomes an IAPR Fellow in 2024 for contributions to face and person recognition and re-identification. The IEEE Computer Society names him to its 2025 Fellow class for contributions to face and person image analysis and recognition.

  6. Since 2025

    Leading UAEU’s Computer Vision Lab

    Since founding the Computer Vision Lab in August 2025, he serves as its director at UAEU. He is an associate professor in the Department of Computer and Network Engineering, with research interests in human-centric AI, multimodal LLMs, image and video generation, and embodied AI.
