Luc Van Gool
Also known as Luc van Gool
Luc Van Gool works on computer vision and machine learning, including object recognition, texture analysis, stereo vision and optical flow. He coauthored SURF, a visual-feature detector and descriptor first presented at ECCV in 2006 and expanded in a 2008 journal paper. SURF uses integral images and a compact representation for detecting and matching image features. He has worked with research teams at ETH and KU Leuven and has recent publications with them.

Timeline
-
2006
SURF conference work
SURF was first presented at ECCV 2006. SURF is a detector and descriptor for scale- and rotation-invariant image features. The method is a shared research contribution.
-
2008
Expanded journal method
The 2008 journal version was by Herbert Bay, Andreas Ess, Tinne Tuytelaars and Luc Van Gool. SURF combines feature detection, description and matching, using integral images and a simplified representation.
-
As of October 2026
Recognition and geometric vision
He works on 2D and 3D recognition, texture, stereo, robot vision and optical flow. He has collaborated with teams at ETH and KU Leuven.
-
2026
Continuing shared research
His publications include 2026 work on vision foundation models and event-based video reconstruction.
