Bo Pang

Bo Pang is a computer scientist whose AI work connects early sentiment classification with multimodal vision-language models. He coauthored a movie-review classifier with Lillian Lee and Shivakumar Vaithyanathan, completed a Cornell computer-science PhD in 2006, and worked at Yahoo! Research before Google AI. At Google, he contributed to graph learning and coauthored Omni-SMoLA; his 2002 paper earned the 2018 NAACL Test-of-Time Award. As of October 2026, he is a staff research scientist at Google Research, working in natural language processing and multimodal AI.

Timeline

  1. 2002

    Sentiment classification by machine learning

In 2002, he coauthors “Thumbs up?” with Lillian Lee and Shivakumar Vaithyanathan, using Naive Bayes, maximum entropy, and support vector machines for movie-review sentiment. Their experiments find that these classifiers outperform human-produced baselines.

  2. 2004

    Subjectivity and minimum cuts

In 2004, he and Lee publish “A Sentimental Education,” a paper on sentiment analysis based on subjectivity summarization and minimum cuts.

  3. 2006

    Cornell, Yahoo!, and Google AI

He completes a PhD in computer science at Cornell in 2006 before working at Yahoo! Research and Google AI.

  4. 2008

    An opinion-mining monograph

With Lillian Lee, he publishes the 2008 monograph “Opinion Mining and Sentiment Analysis,” a survey of the sentiment-analysis field.

  5. 2016

    Graph learning at Google

In 2016, he is among the Google contributors recognized for Expander, a graph-learning platform that uses massive graphs to recognize concepts in language, images, video, and queries.

  6. 2018

    A NAACL Test-of-Time Award

He shares the 2018 NAACL Test-of-Time Award with Lillian Lee and Shivakumar Vaithyanathan for their 2002 sentiment-classification paper.

  7. 2024

    Omni-SMoLA's multimodal experts

In 2024, he coauthors Omni-SMoLA, which mixes multimodal low-rank experts to improve generalist vision-language models.

  8. As of October 2026

    Staff research scientist at Google

As of October 2026, he is a staff research scientist at Google Research. His work covers natural language processing and multimodal AI.
