Angela Schoellig
Also known as A. P. Schoellig, Angela P Schoellig, Angela P. Schoellig
Angela Schoellig works in robotics and machine learning, where she develops methods for autonomous systems. She earned engineering degrees at Georgia Tech and Stuttgart before completing her ETH Zurich doctorate in 2013. Her early work included triple-flip software and quadcopter choreography; she later coauthored a safe-reinforcement-learning paper and SwarmGPT, a 2025 language-model system for drone choreography. In 2017 and 2019, she received robotics and research honors, and she took up an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship at TUM in April 2022. As of October 2026, she leads TUM's Learning Systems and Robotics Lab.

Timeline
-
2007–2013
Engineering and aerial robotics
She earns an M.Sc. in engineering science and mechanics at Georgia Tech in 2007 and an M.Sc. in engineering cybernetics at Stuttgart in 2008. She completes her PhD at ETH Zurich in 2013. During the doctorate, she and colleagues work on software that could enable flying robots to execute a triple flip, and she coauthors “Dance of the flying machines,” a 2013 paper about quadrocopter choreography at ETH Zurich’s Flying Machine Arena.
-
Since 2015
Associate director of CARRE
She becomes associate director of the Centre for Aerial Robotics Research and Education in 2015.
-
2017
Safe reinforcement learning
In 2017, she is an assistant professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies and applies machine learning and control theory to drones, autonomous vehicles, and other robots. She coauthors the NeurIPS paper “Safe Model-based Reinforcement Learning with Stability Guarantees,” which presents an algorithm that explicitly considers safety through stability guarantees. She receives the Sloan Research Fellowship and Ontario Early Researcher Award in 2017 and is named one of MIT Technology Review’s Innovators Under 35 in 2017.
-
2019
A research chair and award
She holds a Canada Research Chair in Machine Learning for Robotics and Control and receives the Robotics: Science and Systems Early Career Spotlight Award in 2019.
-
2020
Associate professor at Toronto
In summer 2020, she becomes an associate professor at the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies and works at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence in Toronto.
-
2021
Humboldt professorship at TUM
She receives the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship for Artificial Intelligence in 2021 and takes up the professorship at TUM in April 2022.
-
2025
SwarmGPT for drone swarms
She coauthors the 2025 paper SwarmGPT, a language-based drone-swarm choreographer that pairs large language models with a safety filter to correct safety and feasibility violations.
-
As of October 2026
Leading TUM's robotics lab
As of October 2026, she is an Alexander von Humboldt Professor for Robotics and Artificial Intelligence at TUM and heads its Learning Systems and Robotics Lab.
