Mark S. Fox
Mark S. Fox researches knowledge representation, ontologies and constraint-directed reasoning. He earned his CMU doctorate in 1983, co-founded Carnegie Group in 1984 and worked on AI systems for industry. He returned to Toronto in 1991, the year of his AAAI fellowship. His shared enterprise research includes TOVE ontologies and design methods using competency questions. Later roles include the Centre for Social Services Engineering from 2014 and a distinguished urban-systems professorship from 2015. His work connects formal representations with organizational planning.

Timeline
-
1975–1983
Computing and intelligent systems
Fox earned a computing bachelor’s degree in 1975 and a Carnegie Mellon doctorate in 1983. He helped found the Robotics Institute in 1979 and its Intelligent Systems Laboratory. His research involved organization models, distributed systems and constraint-directed scheduling.
-
1984–1988
AI systems for industry
Fox co-founded Carnegie Group in 1984, developing AI software for engineering, manufacturing and telecommunications. Fox became an associate professor at CMU in 1987 and founding director of its integrated manufacturing decision-systems center in 1988. His work linked research methods with shared industrial software development.

1991 and enterprise research
Toronto and shared ontologies
Fox returned to Toronto in 1991 as research chair in enterprise integration. AAAI elected him a Fellow that year. He led TOVE work on representations of enterprise structure, resources and behavior and co-developed ontology-design methods based on competency questions.

2014–2015
Social services and urban systems
Fox became founding director of the Centre for Social Services Engineering in 2014 and a distinguished urban-systems professor in 2015. The research applies engineering models and information representations to social-service delivery and cities.
