Bing Pan

Also known as 潘兵

Bing Pan is a researcher in experimental mechanics whose digital image correlation work measures displacement and strain in hot materials. He studies subset-size selection in 2008, develops iterative and pointwise least-squares methods in 2009, and coauthors a high-temperature measurement system in 2010. He receives the Hetenyi Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics in 2018 and China's National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2019. His 2022 News & Views examines deep learning for optical metrology, and a paper with Yu Liping presents single-camera DIC for hypersonic vehicle thermal-protection materials. In April 2026, he is a professor at Beihang and chief scientist at Haytham Technology.

Timeline

  1. 2008

    DIC subset-size selection

In 2008, he coauthors the Optics Express paper “Study on subset size selection in digital image correlation for speckle patterns.”

  2. 2009

    Iterative least-squares DIC

In 2009, he coauthors a digital image correlation method that uses iterative least squares to measure displacement and pointwise least squares to measure strain.

  3. 2010

    High-temperature DIC system

In 2010, he coauthors a non-contact system that combines simulated aerodynamic heating and digital image correlation to measure thermal deformation in materials used in high-speed vehicles.

  4. 2018

    A Hetenyi Award

He receives the Hetenyi Award from the Society for Experimental Mechanics in 2018.

  5. 2019

    Distinguished Young Scholars award

He receives China's National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars in 2019.

  6. 2022

    Deep learning in optical metrology

In 2022, he writes a News & Views on deep learning in optical metrology, covering fringe denoising, phase unwrapping and single-shot profilometry.

  7. 2022

    Single-camera high-temperature DIC

With Yu Liping, he coauthors a single-camera, three-dimensional digital image correlation system in 2022 for measuring high-temperature deformation in hypersonic vehicle thermal-protection materials.

  8. April 2026

    Professor and chief scientist

In April 2026, he is a professor at Beihang and chief scientist at Haytham Technology. His team and Yu Liping's group make progress in high-temperature thermal-mechanical testing, with results published in Optics and Laser Technology.
