Jun Wang
Jun Wang studies how recurrent neural networks can solve optimization problems and choose useful features. He earned degrees in electrical and systems engineering in China and the United States before holding faculty posts in North Dakota, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The IAPR recognized his neurodynamics work in 2012, and IEEE CIS gave him its Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2014. Since 2016 he has been a chair professor at City University of Hong Kong; in 2025 he became editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence.

Timeline
-
1982–1991
Training in engineering
He earned a B.S. in electrical engineering at Dalian Institute of Technology in 1982 and an M.S. in systems engineering there in 1985. He completed a systems engineering Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University in 1991.
-
1990–2016
From North Dakota to Hong Kong
He became an assistant professor at the University of North Dakota in 1990 and an associate professor there in 1993. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1995, became professor in 2002, and held a Changjiang chair at Shanghai Jiao Tong University from 2008 to 2011.
-
2012–2019
Awards and editorial work
The IAPR named him a fellow in 2012 for contributions to neurodynamics and its applications, and IEEE CIS gave him its Neural Networks Pioneer Award in 2014. With Zheng Yan and Guocheng Li, he published “A collective neurodynamic optimization approach to bound-constrained nonconvex optimization,” a method that uses recurrent neural networks with particle-swarm optimization to solve bounded nonconvex problems. He served as editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics from 2014 to 2019.
-
Since 2016
A chair in computational intelligence
He has been Chair Professor of Computational Intelligence at City University of Hong Kong since 2016. His current research interests include neural networks and their applications.
-
2021
Recurrent nets select features
With Yadi Wang and Xiaoping Li, he coauthored “A neurodynamic optimization approach to supervised feature selection via fractional programming.” The paper uses two one-layer recurrent neural networks to solve a feature-selection problem formulated as fractional programming.
-
2021
Joining a European academy
Academia Europaea elected him a foreign member in 2021.
-
Since 2025
Leading an AI journal
He serves as editor-in-chief of IEEE Transactions on Artificial Intelligence.
