Ben Glocker
Ben Glocker applies machine learning to medical images, with a focus on image analysis and clinical use. He developed a TUM diploma thesis on image registration, completed a PhD in 2011, researched at Microsoft Research Cambridge, and joined Imperial in 2013. His Imperial research spans machine learning and causal reasoning for medical imaging, with work on safe clinical AI. He received a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in 2023 and Imperial's President's Medal for Excellence in Research in 2024. As of October 2026, he is Professor in Machine Learning for Imaging and holds the Kheiron Medical/Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair in Safe Deployment of Medical Imaging AI.

Timeline
-
2007
An image-registration thesis
At the Technical University of Munich, he develops a mathematical model for image registration in his diploma thesis and wins the Werner von Siemens Excellence Award in 2007.
-
2010–2013
A doctorate and Cambridge research
He holds a Research Fellowship at Darwin College, University of Cambridge, from 2010 to 2012, completes a PhD at TU Munich in 2011, and works as a postdoctoral researcher in Microsoft Research Cambridge's Machine Learning & Perception Group before joining Imperial's Department of Computing in October 2013.
-
2013–2022
Imperial appointments
He joins Imperial's Department of Computing as a Lecturer in 2013, becomes Senior Lecturer in 2017 and Reader in 2019, then becomes Professor in 2022 and co-leads the Biomedical Image Analysis Group. A 2016 review he coauthors describes a shift from hand-crafted image models to data-driven models built with machine learning; his 2020 perspective examines causal reasoning, data scarcity, and mismatch between development and target settings.
-
2023
A Royal Academy research chair
In 2023, he receives a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Chair for safe deployment of medical imaging AI. The chair focuses on safeguards such as automatic failure detection, performance monitoring, and bias analysis.
-
2024
An Imperial impact medal
He receives Imperial's President's Medal for Excellence in Research in the Excellence in Impact category in 2024.
-
As of October 2026
Professor and privacy research
He is Professor in Machine Learning for Imaging at Imperial and holds the Kheiron Medical/RAEng Research Chair in Safe Deployment of Medical Imaging AI. In June 2026, he and Imperial colleagues examine how membership inference attacks can reveal whether a patient's data appeared in a medical AI model's training set.
