Researcher

D. Louis Collins

Also known as Louis Collins

Louis Collins is a McGill professor whose computerized image processing and a random forest classifier segment brain tissue in MRI scans. He completed a master's in electrical engineering and a PhD in biomedical engineering at McGill before doing postdoctoral research in Rennes, France. He returned to Montreal in 1996 as a research associate, joined the McGill faculty in 1999, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2023. In 2019 he co-authored a study showing that MRI and cognitive scores complement each other in predicting Alzheimer's dementia. As of October 2026, he is a full professor in the departments of neurology and neurosurgery and of biomedical engineering.
