Ba‐Ngu Vo

Also known as Ba Ngu Vo, Ba-Ngu B. Vo

Ba-Ngu Vo is a professor at Curtin University and an IEEE Fellow, known for the stochastic geometric approach to multi-object systems, with applications from surveillance to computer vision and robotics. After dual bachelor's degrees in pure mathematics and electrical engineering in 1994 and a PhD in 1997, Vo joined the University of Melbourne in 2000 and became Winthrop Professor and Chair of Signal Processing at the University of Western Australia in 2010. In 2010, a team led by Vo won the Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in support of Defence or National Security for multi-target tracking algorithms, sharing it with Ba-Tuong Vo and Antonio Cantoni. Curtin University announced the appointment of Vo as Professor and Chair of Signals and Systems in 2013, and papers followed on generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli filters in 2015 and 2017, a multi-camera 3D tracker in 2020, and Gibbs sampling for multi-object posteriors in 2026.

Timeline

  1. 1994–1997

    Mathematics and engineering degrees

Dual bachelor's degrees in pure mathematics and electrical engineering, with first-class honours, come in 1994, and a PhD follows in 1997.

  2. 2000–2010

    Winthrop Professor at UWA

In 2000, Vo joins the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at the University of Melbourne. In 2010, a move to the School of Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering at the University of Western Australia brings the posts of Winthrop Professor and Chair of Signal Processing.

  3. 2010

    A Eureka Prize for tracking

A team led by Vo, with Ba-Tuong Vo and Antonio Cantoni, wins the 2010 Eureka Prize for Outstanding Science in support of Defence or National Security. Their new family of algorithms for tracking multiple targets is already used in international surveillance, including the US Space Fence, and handles thousands of objects on off-the-shelf computers.

  4. 2013

    Chair of Signals and Systems

In January 2013, Curtin University announces that Vo has been appointed Professor and Chair of Signals and Systems in its Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Vo is working with colleagues to establish a research centre on sensors, signals and systems.

  5. 2015–2017

    Labeled multi-Bernoulli tracking filters

In 2015, Hung Gia Hoang, Ba-Tuong Vo and Vo post an implementation of the generalized labeled multi-Bernoulli (GLMB) filter that combines prediction and update into a single step and truncates with Gibbs sampling. In 2017, Daniel S. Bryant, Ba-Tuong Vo, Vo and Brandon A. Jones post a GLMB-based filter that adds object spawning to birth and death and estimates a spawned object's state together with its lineage.

  6. 2020

    A multi-camera 3D tracker

In 2020, Jonah Ong, Ba-Tuong Vo, Vo, Du Yong Kim and Sven Nordholm post a paper on an online multi-camera multi-object tracker that requires only monocular detector training and gives 3D trajectory estimates in the world frame. A 3D occlusion model for Bayesian multi-view multi-object filtering folds track management, state estimation, clutter rejection and occlusion handling into a single recursion.

  7. By 2022

    IEEE Fellow and Future Fellow

By 2022, Vo is an IEEE Fellow and a recipient of the Australian Research Council's inaugural Future Fellowship. In January 2022, the IEEE Signal Processing Society schedules Vo to present a webinar, Bayesian Multi-object Tracking: Probability Hypothesis Density Filter and Beyond, on using labels in the random finite set framework to estimate multi-object trajectories.

  8. As of October 2026

    Professor at Curtin University

Vo is a professor in electrical engineering at Curtin University, with research in target tracking, sensor management, computer vision and situational awareness. In April 2026, Vo and Ba-Tuong Vo post Multi-Object Posterior Computation via Gibbs Sampling, which develops the first multi-scan multi-object smoothing algorithm for superpositional measurements.
